As one of the best-known characters in DC Comics, it's not shocking that a Flash movie has been in the works for a long time. With the birth of the DC Extended Universe coming out of Man of Steel and Batman v Superman, Warner Brothers announced a number of films, and Flash was set to have his own movie come out in 2018.

Clearly, that didn't happen. A series of events has slowed the process of the DC movies, and Flash in particular. The Fastest Man Alive has run through four different directors or directing teams before landing on Andy Muschietti, best known for It and It: Chapter Two. At DC FanDome, a number of news items about the upcoming Flash movie - now scheduled for 2022 - were shared, but there is still much fans don't know about the film.

10 Flash Fact: Based On Flashpoint

Flashpoint, the 2011 miniseries by Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert, has become a major story not only for Flash, but for the DC Universe. In the story, Flash goes back in time to stop the murder of his mother, and in doing so he alters the course of history, creating a new, darker universe where Thomas Wayne is Batman, Martha Wayne is Joker, Atlantis and Themyscira are at war, and Superman is being held captive by the US government.

Warner Brothers have been upfront that the Flash movie will be used to give the DC movies a soft reboot and it will share plotlines with Flashpoint.

9 Flash Mystery: The Actual Plot

While dedicated fans know that the movie is taking some cues from the Flashpoint storyline of the comics, director Andy Muschietti has said that it is more in name than in actual plot, not unlike how Captain America: Civil War was loosely based on the Marvel event series. So the question comes up, what exactly is the movie about?

Fans know that Flash will be going through the multiverse, but does this happen when he tries to go back in time to save his mom or is there another event that kicks things off? At this time, there are still plenty of plot questions that haven't been answered, but with filming set to start in March 2021, more information should be coming soon.

8 Flash Fact: Lots Of Batmen

One thing fans know for sure that along with Flash, Batman will be in the movie. In fact, there will be more than one Batman in the movie. Michael Keaton, who played the Dark Knight in 1989's Batman and its sequel Batman Returns, will once again don the cape and cowl, which surprised fans around the world.

Possibly even more shocking was the announcement that Ben Affleck, the latest actor to play the Caped Crusader, will be returning to the role for the Flash film. It was believed that Affleck had left the character behind after Justice League, in part because he decided not to direct and star in a solo Batman movie.

7 Flash Mystery: The Villain

While the Flashpoint comic uses Reverse-Flash as the main villain, it isn't clear that the Flash movie is following the same path. At this point, no one knows who the villain for the Flash film will be, though the smart money is still on Reverse-Flash.

Recent rumors have suggested that Captain Cold may be appearing in the movie, but it isn't clear if he would be the major villain or just serve for a James Bond-style opening. And of course, if Flash is running around the Multiverse, other possible main villains would include Johnny Quick from Earth-Three and the Anti-Monitor.

6 Flash Fact: Cyborg May Appear

At an early stage of the Flash movie-making process, the story was more of a buddy cop film where Flash and Cyborg would team up to handle a problem. Over the course of the many directors and scripts, it looks like Cyborg's role has been severely cut down, becoming a cameo instead of a major part of the story.

This info came out during the current argument between Cyborg actor Ray Fisher and Warner Brothers. Fisher claims that Joss Whedon, Geoff Johns, and Jon Berg were abusive and unprofessional during the reshoots of Justice League. In a statement on the matter, Warner Brothers claimed that Fisher didn't bring up his issues until he was offered a cameo in Flash. Since Fisher came forward, fellow Justice League star Jason Mamoa has shown support for the actor.

5 Flash Mystery: Is Iris In It?

It's hard to imagine a Flash movie without Iris West in it. The character has been a major part of the Flash mythos since she made her debut alongside Barry Allen back in 1956's Showcase #4.

The girlfriend turned wife of Barry Allen and the aunt of the first Kid Flash, Wally West, Iris has played a big part in many Flash stories. Kiersey Clemons was cast as Iris West and filmed scenes for Justice League, but at this point, there has been no word on if she will appear in the Flash movie.

4 Flash Fact: Who's Behind The Camera

The first Flash script was written by Greg Berlanti, Geoff Johns, Chris Brancato, Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim. While their movie didn't get made, they did end up bringing their vision of the character to TV. Warner Brothers then hired 21 Jump Street and Lego Movie masterminds Phil Lord and Christopher Miller to take over the movie, but the duo left to make Solo for Disney.

Both Seth Grahame-Smith and Rick Famuyiwa were briefly attached to direct the movie. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the due behind Game Night, came on board for a while, but soon quit the project. In the end, Andy Muschietti has been brought in to direct, using a script by Christina Hodson, who wrote Birds of Prey.

3 Flash Mystery: Will Other Heroes Appear?

Fans now know that there will be at least two Batmen in the movie and that Cyborg is in the script, but what about the other heroes? Both Wonder Woman and Aquaman play major roles in the Flashpoint comic, but is Warner Brothers looking to have Gal Gadot and Jason Mamoa appear in the film?

Superman is also a major player in Flashpoint, but if Henry Cavill wasn't willing to do a cameo in Shazam!, what are the chances that he'll do one for Flash? And speaking of Shazam!, will the Big Red Cheese or Black Adam make cameos? No one knows if the will but it would certainly be cool if they did!

2 Flash Fact: New Costume

When fans first got to see Ezra Miller in his Flash costume, there were a lot of mixed feelings. It was great that Flash would be showing up on the big screen, but his costume wasn't what people were expecting. The Flash costume in the comics is sleek and smooth, but Miller's Justice League suit was clunky armor held together with wire. It looked cool, but it didn't really look like Flash.

At DC FanDome, director Andy Muschietti and Ezra Miller revealed concept art of a new Flash costume that would be used in the movie. Based on the art, Flash will be getting a suit that looks more like the comic book version. And while the new Flash suit was the star of that concept art, it was hard for fans not to get excited about the Michael Keaton style Batman standing behind Flash.

1 Flash Mystery: Release Date

While the Flash film is currently set to hit theaters on June 3, 2022, the date isn't set in stone just yet. For one thing, Flash hasn't even started filming yet, and with restrictions from COVID-19, the March 2021 start date could get moved back. Even without that in mind, the Flash movie has been bouncing around Warner Brother's schedule since 2016.

It was originally set to be released in 2018, but it kept being moved as Warner Brothers searched for a writer and a director. It slipped from 2018 to 2020, and then in December 2019, it was moved to July 1, 2022 before announcing another date change in April 2020.
