It looks like Killer Frost (Danielle Panabaker) may soon have to answer for her past crimes on The Flash, but it is at least possible that she could avoid going to prison (without going on the run). The character, who has been a reliable member of Team Flash for some time now, was once a supervillain and an enemy of Central City.
The Flash just offered another major development in her story. After years of sharing the same body, Caitlin Snow and Killer Frost have been split into two different people. In The Flash season 7, episode 5, titled “Fear Me,” it was discovered that the new status quo for the characters occurred as a result of Frost being hit by a blast from Eva McCulloch (Efrat Dor). At first, Caitlin tried to put them back together, but upon talking with Frost, she realized that it may be better for them to remain apart so that Frost can find her own identity. Though this was presented as a positive change for the character, the end of the episode put another obstacle in her way when Iris (Candace Patton) found out that a law enforcement officer plans to arrest Frost for the crimes she committed in earlier seasons.
It’s true that prior to her redemption arc, Killer Frost was a criminal who assaulted others and tried to kill members of Team Flash on multiple occasions. That being said, this doesn’t mean she’ll do time. It could be that if she’s arrested and brought up on charges, a pardon could be arranged or she could be acquitted. After all, it’s sure to be taken into consideration that Frost is a longtime ally of Team Flash. The Scarlet Speedster may get most of the credit for all the times he’s saved Central City, but fellow superheroes like Vibe (Carlos Valdez), Frost, and Elongated Man (Hartley Sawyer) have played vital roles in many of his biggest battles. Frost’s recent heroics could be what save her from prison.
Frost getting off easy would be out of the question if she had actually murdered people, but as the character herself has pointed out, she never killed anyone. She is guilty of attempted murder to be sure, but Team Flash always stopped her from landing the killing blow. This will be most certainly be brought up when it comes time to determine what punishment (if any) she should receive from the Central City justice system.
Whether she gets away with her crimes or not, it’s good that The Flash is finally exploring Frost’s criminal history. For a while now, too many characters have ignored the fact that she’s never faced consequences for the things she’s done, and this needs to at the very least be addressed. Regardless of who she is as a person now, it makes sense for her (like anyone else) to be held accountable for her actions. One big issue with imprisoning her before season 7 is that it wouldn’t have been fair to Caitlin Snow, who doesn’t deserve any blame for Frost’s illegal acts. However, the two being permanently split apart changes things and makes Frost’s villainous past a real issue that the team will be forced to deal with in the episodes to come.
