The DC Extended Universe and Arrowverse versions of the Flash cross over in fan art. On The CW, Grant Gustin has played Barry Allen/The Flash since his first appearance as the character in 2013. Meanwhile, Ezra Miller was introduced as the DCEU's Scarlet Speedster in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Each actor has put their own spin on the classic comic character, though Gustin has spent far more time in the role. The Flash season 7 will premiere in 2021, and Gustin has also guest-starred on several other Arrowverse shows. Meanwhile, fans are still waiting for a standalone Flash movie with Miller, though that will finally come to fruition in 2022.
Until this year, the Arrowverse and DCEU were completely separate entities, which many assumed was a mandate from Warner Bros. Despite the multiverse, it was widely believed The CW shows would never be able to acknowledge the existence of DC film characters. However, that all changed with the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover. It united various TV shows and movies of the DC canon in a way never seen before. This included the DCEU, with Miller shocking fans thanks to a brief cameo in a scene with Gustin. Despite the many twists of the Crisis crossover, the double Flash scene was arguably the biggest.
Soon after the crossover, artist erathrim20 revealed a neat image of Gustin and Miller's Flash characters side-by-side. However, the art was shared again this week, as audiences look forward to the Flash movie, as well as the Arrowverse's return in 2021. Check out the Flash image below:
Even though it's been some time since the Flash scene in Crisis on Infinite Earths surprised viewers, this art serves as a good reminder of that moment. It was likely a one-time deal, but this image makes it easy to imagine Miller and Gustin's characters running side-by-side to defeat a common enemy. It also highlights the differences in their costumes. It's impressive Gustin's holds up as well as it does here, considering it was made on a TV vs. movie budget.
Discussion of the two Flash characters will likely increase when the Flash movie finally comes out in 2022. It will be the longest amount of time audiences have spent with Miller's Barry Allen, which may make it easier to compare his to Gustin's version. Additionally, the Flash movie will adapt the classic Flashpoint storyline from the comics, which The Flash TV show has already tackled. It seems inevitable there will be some comparison in that regard as well, though this art makes it clear the heroes work best side-by-side.
