With the departure of ArrowThe Flash has become the anchor point of the Arrowverse. But with the events of last season leaving things on and off-screen up in the air, Team Flash could be entering Season 7 with more unknowns than ever before.

With little known about what Barry Allen's next challenge is in The CW series, let's look at everything we know about The Flash Season 7 so far.

THE STORY SO FAR

The Flash's sixth season ended on a major cliffhanger, as Barry and Team Flash prepared to infiltrate the Mirrorverse to rescue Iris. Little did they know, however, that Iris has recently disappeared to parts unknown. Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic halting production in March 2020, the season stopped short at 19 episodes.

Showrunner Eric Wallace confirmed that the intended last three episodes of Season 6 will serve as the first three episodes of Season 7. He believes the choice makes the new season stronger because "it's forcing us to look at these two separate things — which is the end of Eva [McCulloch's] story and the beginning of the next villain's story and how she relates to Barry and Iris." The first part of Season 7 should seemingly pick up right with Barry's search for Iris in the Mirrorverse, before segueing into bringing in a new Big Bad.

An official synopsis for the Season 7 premiere says, "Flash will ultimately defeat Mirror Master. But in doing so, he'll also unleash an even more powerful and devastating threat on Central City: one that threatens to tear his team—and his marriage—apart." That threat is most likely Godspeed. After bothering Team Flash with several clones throughout the season, Wallace indicates that the evil speedster is coming--and soon.

FILMING

Filming on Season 7 technically started back in March 2020, with production on what was at the time going to be Season 6, Episode 20. That episode -- which was about 90% filmed by the time things shut down -- will serve as the Season 7 premiere. It's been reported that filming will start back up again for The FlashCharmed and Riverdale in August or September. The show's filming location in Vancouver recently relaxed its restrictions after being praised for its handling of the coronavirus.

CAST AND CREW

It's assumed series regulars Grant Gustin (Barry Allen/The Flash), Candice Patton (Iris West-Allen), Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin Snow/Frost), Carlos Valdes (Cisco Ramon/Vibe), Danielle Nicolet (Cecile Horton) and Jesse L. Martin (Joe West) will continue their roles into Season 7. It's also expected Tom Cavanagh will once again return, though it remains to be seen which (or how many) doppelgangers of Harrison Wells he'll play this time around. Efrat Dor is likely to appear in at least the season's first few episodes as a recently-freed Mirror Mistress, picking up the storyline from the end of Season 6.

The off-season has been eventful for Hartley Sawyer and his character Ralph Dibny/Elongated Man. In June, it was discovered that Sawyer had made a series of misogynistic and racist tweets on his Twitter account from 2011 to 2014. In response, Wallace and The CW fired Sawyer, indicating he would not be returning for Season 7. Wallace then released a subsequent statement about his decision, saying, "I will continue to find Black and Brown writers, directors, actors and producers of all genders to help tell Flash stories. Their stories are part of the American narrative, too, and must be heard. And the more you hear and see us, the more you will begin to recognize one simple fact: We're human beings too."

While Sawyer is confirmed to be out of the Arrowverse, the show has yet to make an announcement as to what they will do with Dibny. Many have debated whether he should be written out of the show -- considering the recent storyline that hinted at a romantic relationship between him and Sue Dearborn-- or if the series should bring in an entirely new character in the style of Batwoman to become the new Elongated Man.

RELEASE DATE

Despite the pandemic delaying production, The CW unveiled in May its plan to premiere most of its programming in January 2021. Network president Mark Pedowitz said all shows will be moving forward with a full-season order, meaning fans could see Season 7 of The Flash premiere in January and run a full season straight into the beginning of June.

Returning to The CW for its seventh season in 2021, The Flash stars Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Carlos Valdes, Danielle Panabaker, Tom Cavanagh, Jesse L. Martin and Danielle Nicolet. Production aims to restart in August.
