Malta To Pay International Travelers To Visit Mediterranean This Summer - Forbes

A lot of people have been imagining sitting on a European coastline for over a year, unable to travel. And now, as countries gradually reopen, one EU country is offering more–Mediterranean beaches, medieval fortresses, traditional sleepy villages–and tourists being paid to take their own holiday.

After Greece opened to international travelers Monday 19 April, following in the footsteps of Iceland, which opened March 18 and after France announced it hopes to open in May, another EU country, Malta, is stepping into the picture and opening to tourists soon.

Malta’s Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo has announced that it will pay its international travelers up to €200 ($240) if they stay more than two nights. The deal has been put together to try to encourage people to visit the island, where 27% of its revenue comes from tourism–more than its Greek or Italian neighbors.

Someone who stays in a four-star hotel will receive €150 ($180), someone in a three-star will receive €100 ($120). And for those who make the journey to Gozo, the island next to Malta, they will receive 10% more. Bartolo said that “the scheme is aimed at putting Malta’s hotels in a very competitive position as international tourism restarts.” Euronews reported that the initiative would be paid in part by the hotels and in part by the government.

The scheme is for independent travelers, those not booking via a travel agent or holiday company and the government hopes to attract up to 35,000 people through it.

Malta is confident that the scheme will work because it is in a good position regarding Covid-19–it has one of the highest vaccinated populations in the EU at the moment–42% of its residents have been vaccinated with one dose, the highest in the region after the U.K.

The country plans to open on June 1 to anyone who can prove they have been fully vaccinated ten days before arrival.
