The Flash: DC Puts Two Kid Flashes Face-to-Face for the First Time - CBR - Comic Book Resources

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Flash #759, by Joshua Williamson, Rafa Sandoval, Scott Kolins, Jordi Tarragona, Arif Prianto, Hi-Fi and Steve Wands, on sale now.

Over the years, the Flash Family has continued to grow bigger, with different speedsters joining Barry Allen to help him in his superhero career as the Scarlet Speedster. The sidekick role of Kid-Flash has been one of the most rotating roles in the DC Universe, as Barry has gained his own list of Boy Wonders to assist him in defending Central City, each with their own respective connection to the Speed Force.

And as the final battle against the villainous Reverse-Flash escalates and the Flash Family rallies together, two teenage heroes who have each held the role of Kid-Flash finally meet for the first time: Wallace West and Bart Allen.

Impulse Kid Flash

Joined by the Legion of Zoom, Eobard Thawne has finally realized his life-long ambition of becoming his greatest hero by stealing control of the Flash's body while Barry's consciousness is trapped within the Speed Force. With the rest of the Flash Family unaware of the swap, Thawne reunites with them at their safe house to assure them the threat has been taken care of while congratulating Wallace and new speedster Avery on a job well done. Before Thawne's deception is complete, however, Impulse arrives on the scene, having seen through the villain's deceit after a previous encounter. Impulse knocks down the antagonist possessing his grandfather's body before briefly exchanging introductions with Wallace, visibly incredulous that another teenage speedster is actively wearing the mantle of Kid-Flash.

After debuting as Impulse in Mark Waid and Mike Wieringo's The Flash #92, Bart initially had no interest in becoming the latest Kid-Flash. However, he relented when a new iteration of the Teen Titans was formed while being targeted by Deathstroke. Following his death and resurrection after a brief turn at being the Flash in Infinite Crisis, Bart resumed his role as Impulse, and reunited with his friends in Young Justice.

Wallace was introduced during the New 52 era as a possible replacement for Wally and a cousin of Iris West in 2014's The Flash Annual #3 by Van Jensen, Robert Venditti, Ron Frenz and Brett Booth. At the start of DC Rebirth, Wallace was retconned to be an entirely different character, the son of Iris' brother Daniel who was also the new 52 iteration of the Reverse-Flash. Using the name Wallace to further differentiate himself from his namesake, the young speedster took on the mantle of Kid-Flash after his future-self died and transferred his powers to him through the Speed Force.

It's clear from the start of their first interaction that there's a level of distrust and a burgeoning rivalry forming between the two heroes who called themselves Kid Flash. This interpersonal friction quickly takes a backseat, of course, with the Reverse-Flash still very much in control of Barry Allen's body and ready to take on the Flash Family.

Still, the rivalry adds an interesting, new dynamic to the growing cast of superhero speedsters as Wallace continues to add his own unique take to the legacy of the Scarlet Speedster. This new take is sure to lead to interesting new directions for both him and Impulse, as long as they can put aside their differences to handle the threat of Reverse-Flash.
