Barry Allen’s powers on The Flash have gone through several transformations and fluctuations over the course of seven seasons, but the Speed Force’s advanced, more human, changes in season 7 might be due to his and Iris West-Allen’s actions. As a cosmic entity that rarely appeared beyond the power running through The Flash, the Speed Force took on a different, more intriguing form in season 7. While The Flash has yet to directly address the root of these alterations, it’s possible the answer lies with the Arrowverse series’ main couple.
Barry and Iris’ literal spark of lightning, which first appeared near the end of The Flash season 1, was the key to Barry realizing that their love was strong enough to restart the Speed Force during the conclusion of the Mirrorverse arc in season 7’s third episode. With Barry’s powers completely drained, Iris was able to power the device that transferred her residual Speed Force energy to Barry, effectively rebooting the extra-dimensional source.
The rebooted version was reborn from Barry and Iris' powerful connection, with Barry confirming his powers were back completely and with an upgrade. He could run and heal faster, all thanks to the new and improved Speed Force. However, the Speed Force itself has been acting different than it ever has before in The Flash season 7. Appearing in human form, the Speed Force was going through its own evolution and the reason could very well have to do with Barry and Iris being its new source.
Why The Flash’s Speed Force Got A Reboot
The Speed Force was always a presence on The Flash, primarily because it was the source of Barry’s powers. However, the Speed Force was infected by an external entity in season 6 after the cells of Dr. Ramsey Rosso (aka, the villain Bloodwork) were transferred to Barry during a transfusion. Suffice it to say the Speed Force couldn’t take this intrusion and became sick because of it. The Flash purged Bloodwork from his system, but the damage to the Speed Force had already been done. Barry’s powers started acting up soon afterward and the cosmic force died a slow death as the superhero’s speed was depleted completely at the beginning of The Flash season 7. Barry attempted to reboot the Speed Force through various means, including the Artificial Speed Force that temporarily gave him back his powers. But nothing worked until Iris connected with Barry to transfer the residual Speed Force, restoring it (with a twist).
The Flash Doesn’t Trust The Speed Force Update
Barry was incredibly hesitant to get too close to the Speed Force. He was willing to protect the cosmic entity, now a physical manifestation in the form of Barry's mother Nora, but that was pretty much the extent of their relationship. At first, it seemed like Barry took issue with the fact the Speed Force was wearing his mother’s face and was also acting like his caretaker, worrying about his health and safety, while also displaying feelings of joy and fear. However, The Flash was uncomfortable with the new Speed Force having more of a personality — he’d long been used to it being an extra-dimensional source with no deep ties to him beyond powering his abilities and that’s clearly no longer the case. In short, Barry can say goodbye to all previous representations of the Speed Force.
The Flash was ultimately unwilling to accept the changes being made to the Speed Force, even going so far as to avoid calling it “Nora” because that would humanize a cosmic entity. It was hard for him to come to terms with its growth and it’s understandable he might be wary of the Speed Force changing, especially considering the way their relationship used to function up until The Flash season 7. After all, it’s hard to tell how these upgrades will affect Barry’s powers in the future or even if Speed Force Nora is telling the truth about the other cosmic forces born the night of its rebirth — Sage Force, Still Force, and Strength Force — being out to destroy it or if there’s something more sinister going on.
Barry & Iris’ Love Metaphysically Altered The Speed Force
It’s possible Barry and Iris’ love, which powered the new Speed Force, metaphysically changed it when it was reborn. The cosmic entity had never gotten a reboot that stemmed from two people before and it could be that a piece of their strong connection was transferred over to the Speed Force in the process. The Speed Force's presence at Barry and Iris' loft made the entity realize and pick up on human emotion in a way it hadn't in the past. It was becoming "something more." The Speed Force could cook (and enjoy it), feel the intensity of emotions, and care about things in a way it didn’t fully do before. These decidedly more human traits could be an extension of Barry and Iris feelings for each other. The Flash did, after all, confirm why Barry was the Paragon of Love and it could explain the Speed Force changes as well.
The couple bringing the Speed Force back could have changed its core, which could explain why it's acting in a more human way. Nora can feel things with depth now and that’s a big deal. Previously, the Speed Force was an omniscient cosmic entity that communicated with The Flash in a detached manner. The Speed Force treated Barry more like a conduit for its powers than a human being to care for on a personal level. In The Flash season 7, however, the Speed Force was no longer a mere cosmic force, but an elevated presence with senses, needs, and emotions. It wanted to be closer to Barry, to understand him better. It was also growing closer to Iris, whom the Speed Force had never directly interacted with before.
It can’t be a coincidence that these changes are happening specifically after Barry and Iris rebooted the Speed Force together. These grounded, more personal characteristics are a far cry from the ethereal way the Speed Force operated before and it could be a combination of Barry and Iris’ own human traits, as well as the deep love and care they have for one another, passed down to a cosmic entity. What that means for the future of the Speed Force remains unclear. Will it continue changing to become more human? It's possible and the series will have to address why these changes are happening at some point. Either way, it would certainly be a unique angle for The Flash to take in season 7, especially considering how crucial Barry and Iris' relationship has been to the series thus far.
