The Flash Season 7 Has A Sneaky Friends Easter Egg | Screen Rant - Screen Rant

The Flash season 7 has a sneaky Friends Easter egg. The beloved NBC sitcom ended its ten-season run in 2004, but it’s still often referenced throughout various mediums, an example of its enduring legacy and effect on the pop culture zeitgeist. However, the reference to Friends isn’t immediately obvious, nor does it actually happen during the episode itself.

Season 7’s episode six saw Cisco Ramon and Chester P. Runk time traveling back to the 90s while investigating and attempting to find the latest cosmic force — Deon (aka, the Still Force), whose powers include stopping time in its tracks and repeating the same day over again. The Flash makes references to various 90s-era movies, TV shows, and general pop culture staples including Blockbuster, the now defunct video rental store, Space Jam, Family Matters’ Steve Urkel, and Jurassic Park. However, the Friends mention is less obvious since it doesn’t appear within the episode itself. It’s actually hidden right there in episode six’s title, called “The One With the Nineties.” It’s a direct nod to the episode titles employed by Friends, all of which included “The One With,” “The One Where,” and other prepositions at the start.

The Flash found a way to incorporate the famous 90s sitcom without being deliberate about it. It works in this instance because the episode title now has a double meaning; it explains what The Flash episode itself will be about and is a callback to a series that was a staple of the decade Cisco and Chester visited to begin with. It’s clever primarily because it doesn’t call out Friends in its dialogue or its set production, leaving viewers to subtly realize what the episode title is referencing on their own. Well done, Flash writers!

However, The Flash isn’t the first time an Arrowverse show has paid homage to Friends before. In season 5 of Legends of Tomorrow, the characters were trapped inside various TV shows, including Downton Abbey and Star Trek-like series. Zari, Behrad, and Nate were cast members on a show called Ultimate Buds, a unique take on the title of the famed NBC sitcom. Of course, Legends of Tomorrow’s reference to the 90s series was more overt, with Zari and Behrad living in an apartment similar to Monica Geller’s and Nate, who lived across the hall, going so far as to rework a classic Chandler Bing line (“Could I BE anymore of a kiss-misser?”).

Friends continues to live on in a variety of ways — streaming, cable reruns, homages, etc. — and its influence on television can’t be overstated. When audiences think of the 90s, they likely recall all the times Rachel and Ross were mired in romantic drama or Phoebe’s weird songs. Similar to how Blockbuster has become a symbol of the decade, Friends also lives on. The Flash employs time travel a lot on the show, but “The One With the Nineties” was the one time it made perfect sense to reference the ever-popular NBC sitcom and the superhero series did not disappoint.
