WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Flash #759, by Joshua Williamson, Rafa Sandoval, Scott Kolins, Jordi Tarragona, Arif Prianto, Hi-Fi and Steve Wands, on sale now.
In The Flash #759, Barry Allen finds himself in his greatest predicament yet, as his longtime nemesis the Reverse-Flash having taken control of his body and the rest of the Flash Family unaware of the sinister change. With the villainous speedster's long-standing greatest wish to replace his idol finally having come true, Eobard Thawne quickly puts his new body through its paces by being the kind of superhero Barry never could.
After his initial trial run, Thawne's sinister colors begin to show through as he targets a figure very close to Barry: His time-displaced grandson Bart Allen, now the teenage superhero Impulse.
As Impulse enjoys a day alongside his teammates on Young Justice in New Mexico, Thawne whisks Bart away to a secluded forest from the rest of the superhero team. With Bart unable to decipher the true identity of the man controlling his grandfather's body, the two speedsters enjoy a quick cross-country race before teaming up to take down the Trickster back in Central City. After seeing how shocked Impulse is at how brutally the Flash defeated his teenage antagonist, Thawne gives his sidekick a cold-hearted pep talk, advising him to step away from his superhero career and reevaluate himself. More cruelly, Thawne reminds Bart of the brief time he spent as the Flash himself and how he failed to live up the Flash's legacy.
Bart had stepped up to become the new Flash in the aftermath of the Infinite Crisis after helping Wally West and his family seal away Superboy-Prime in the Speed Force. The victory was a costly one that saw Wally and his family trapped in a different part of the Speed Force for months and Bart grow from a teenager into a full adult in a matter of seconds by mainlining the extra-dimensional force's energies. Bart reluctantly took on the mantle of the Flash while studying forensic science at the Los Angeles Police Academy, opting to join the Justice League like his mentor instead of continuing on with the Teen Titans.
Bart's time as the Flash proved to be fatally short-lived, following the return of his evil clone Inertia. Inertia rallied the Rogues together against the new Scarlet Speedster while unveiling an experimental new machine that could rob the hero of his connection to the Speed Force. Outnumbered and without his powers, Inertia led the Rogues in beating the Flash to death, with the unintentional consequence of triggering the return of Wally and his family from within the Speed Force. While in the 31st century during the events of Final Crisis, the Legion of Super-Heroes would resurrect Bart, back to his natural appearance as a teenager once again, to help turn the tide against Superboy-Prime and the Legion of Super-Villains before returning to the relative present of the DC Universe, with his original mantle as the teenage Impulse.
Since his return during the DC Rebirth era, Impulse has been just as free-wheeling and carefree as he had before his death, with the fun-loving teenage superhero seemingly free of the emotional burden he carried while the Flash. However, as the Reverse-Flash stages his own takeover of the Scarlet Speedster's legacy, he knows exactly how to twist the metaphorical knife in Bart Allen's conscience in an attempt to get him to leave behind his own superhero ambitions.
Ultimately, this ploy backfires -- Bart knows his grandfather would never be that cruel -- but it is a harsh reminder of Bart's most traumatic defeat during his own brief turn living up to Barry Allen's legacy.
