The Flash Season 7's Biggest Teases So Far (New Captain Cold?) - Screen Rant

Two new posters promoting The Flash hint at the storyline of season 7, and characters who could appear. In addition to resolving the season 6 subplot centered around Iris West-Allen being trapped in a mirror universe, there is a suggestion that Captain Cold could return in a villainous role, or that a new Captain Cold will rise up to replace the original.

Most TV series experienced difficulties as their 2019-2020 seasons came to a close, but The Flash season 6 suffered more than most. The season was cut short because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the finale had to be rewritten at the last minute to account for the scenes that were not filmed. Throw in a scandal centered around Elongated Man actor Hartley Sawyer and a series of disturbing jokes he had made on Twitter, and the producers of The Flash also had to either recast a major role or rewrite the story of season 7 to remove a major subplot involving Ralph Dibny.

Given all that, there's little known what The Flash season 7 will be about, beyond delivering the resolution that should have come through the original season 6 finale. The show's producers have kept quiet about what to expect and what they had planned, beyond a promise that the Reverse Flash would be back after his failed attempt to take possession of Nash Wells' body. Still, the questions remain: what can fans expect to see in The Flash season 7 and what events might be teased by the posters promoting the new season?

Iris Returning With Mirror Powers

The one storyline that it is certain to be addressed in The Flash season 7 is that of Iris West-Allen, who spent the second half of season 6 trapped in a mirror universe. One of the two new posters for The Flash season 7 centers around Iris, depicting actress Candice Patton surrounded by pictures of Iris West and The Flash from the comics. Tellingly, the background behind Patton depicts a breaking mirror.

The chief villain of The Flash season 6 was Dr. Eva McCulloch, a scientist who became trapped in a parallel dimension on the night of the STAR Labs particle accelerator explosion. For six years, McCulloch saw her work exploited by her husband, Joseph Carver, who established a metahuman crime syndicate known as the Black Hole. Iris West-Allen became trapped in the same dimension while investing Carver's dirty dealings and partnered with Eva to escape, only to be left behind as Eva sought to take back what was stolen from her.

The finale of The Flash season 6 saw Iris West-Allen disappear in a flash of light, as she made her own preparations to try and find a way out of the mirror universe, even as her own perceptions became warped by her stay in the eldritch world. Some fans theorized that Iris was developing a connection to the mirror universe, as Eva McCulloch had, and would have emerged with the same powers so she could fight Mirror Mistress on even footing in the original season 6 finale. Given the prominence of the breaking mirror behind Iris in the poster, this would seem to be a safe bet for the opening story arc of season 7.

The Return of Len Snart... Or A New Captain Cold?

A picture of Captain Cold is featured in the bottom-right corner of Barry Allen's poster. Wielder of a special "cold gun" that slows molecular motion down to Absolute Zero, Leonard Snart is widely regarded as one of Barry Allen's greatest enemies in the comics, and was brought to life beautifully by Wentworth Miller during the first three seasons of The Flash. Despite his greed, Snart wound up playing the hero for the noble cause of saving the Earth from Vandal Savage and sacrificed himself to end the tyranny of the Time Masters in the first season of Legends of Tomorrow. That, coupled with Wentworth Miller declaring he was done with the Arrowverse after returning to play the heroic Citizen Cold of Earth-X during Legends of Tomorrow season 3, makes Captain Cold returning for The Flash season 7 difficult, but not impossible.

It's possible Miller may have changed his mind about playing Captain Cold again, as he returned for a voice cameo during the Crisis on Infinite Earths event, lending his voice to Leonard, the ship computer aboard Earth-74's Waverider. Captain Cold's death is also not an issue; as Cisco Ramon noted in the first episode of The Flash following the Crisis, many of the Flash's former enemies had been reborn or had their powers altered when they were all recreated on Earth-Prime. This means that Leonard Snart could be back, and have fallen back into his criminal ways. Alternatively, his cold gun might have wound up in the hands of another criminal, who has established themselves as a new Captain Cold. The poster could also hint at the show bringing in Commander Cold, the leader of a time-traveling police force from the future, who adopted the weapons and costumes of the Rogues Gallery.

The Return of Jay Garrick

Another notable character is included in the middle left panel of Barry Allen's poster: a young man in a leather jacket, wearing a red shirt with a yellow lightning bolt. Comic readers will recognize this figure as the first Flash, Jay Garrick, in the middle of changing into his costume. This could signal that Jay Garrick, who was The Flash of Earth-3 in the original pre-Crisis Arrowverse, could also be poised to make a return during The Flash Season 7.

Showrunner Eric Wallace has confirmed that Jay Garrick and his wife Joan survived the Crisis and were reborn on Earth-Prime. However, this doesn't mean that Jay retained his memories of the Pre-Crisis reality or his superpowers. Thankfully, this wouldn't pose too much of a problem as Cisco Ramon will eventually find a way to technologically restore a person's memories of who they were Pre-Crisis. This may come about as Team Flash starts trying to complete work on an artificial Speed Force - an endeavor in which Jay Garrick, who studied the Speed Force more than anyone, could prove utterly invaluable.

The Arrival of the Other Wally West

Perhaps the oddest inclusion in the posters is a shot of the original Wally West from the comics: the red-haired nephew of Iris West, who became the first Kid Flash and took on the mantle of The Flash after the comic book Crisis on Infinite Earths. This version of Wally West recently assumed a major role in the DC Comics universe, having acquired the powers of both Dr. Manhattan and the New God Metron. It is believed that Wally will have a major role to play in restoring the DC Universe in the wake of the current Death Metal storyline.

Surprisingly, the idea of bringing the alternate universe Wally West into the Arrowverse is not as outlandish as it might seem at first glance. The reality fans of The Flash are familiar with is itself a rebooted reality, created when the Reverse Flash Eobard Thawne went back in time intending to kill a young Barry Allen only to kill his mother instead. That means there is an earlier timeline which Thawne was privy to; one where a different version of Wally West might have become The Flash and wound up lost in time as a result of Thawne's machinations and the Crisis. This Wally West could be introduced into the Arrowverse as either a new villain, out to destroy reality to restore his own timeline, or as a successor to Barry Allen. This later option seems more likely, given Grant Gustin is only contracted for one more year on The Flash, but almost anything could be possible in the coming season.
