WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Flash #759
Fans are seeing some familiar faces return to comics as The Flash #759 brings speedsters Jesse Quick and Max Mercury back into the fray. In the most recent issue, Flash villain Eobard Thawne, better known as the Reverse-Flash, has taken over The Flash’s body. Barry Allen's consciousness is left trapped in the Speed Force, where he encounters the two lost speedsters.
Allen doesn't remember the speedster duo at first, still racked with guilt over having caused the events of Flashpoint, which may have left the pair stuck there, though Quick and Mercury guide Barry into remembering who they are. Max explains that they are in a deeper level of the Speed Force. Still, they're going to teach Barry everything they've learned about the Force over the years in the hopes that Allen can retake control of his body from the Reverse-Flash.
Jesse Quick and Max Mercury have not been seen since Flashpoint, which led to universe-altering New 52 and Rebirth events. Since 2016, The Flash has been steadily reintroducing core members of the Flash Family, such as Wally West - who recently became DC Comics’ new Dr.Manhattan - Bart Allen; and even the original Flash, Jay Garrick, have all made recent appearances. The Flash #759 alludes that Flashpoint may be the reason that Jesse Quick and Max Mercury have been knocked out of the Rebirth timeline.
Jesse Quick, also known as Jesse Chambers, was first introduced in 1992 as the daughter of Johnny Quick. Jesse gains her powers from the Speed Force by using a formula that was given to her by her father. Mercury appeared even earlier - in the 1940s - but was only really fleshed out in the 1990s Flash run. Max gains his powers from the spiritual side of the Speed Force, which differs from the science-based powers of the other members of the Flash Family.
The Speed Force is where the Flash Family gains their powers from. The concept has had many different explanations over the years, but it was established in the 1990s with Wally West. The Speed Force has been best described as a cosmic energy source, which allows for the spectacular abilities displayed by the Flash Family. The Speed Force can also be a very powerful prison for speedsters, as shown by the trapped Jesse and Mercury. Additional forces have been introduced since DC Comics’ Rebirth, including the Sage and Strength forces.
With the return of Jesse Quick and Max Mercury, both experts of the Speed Force, maybe they will share more insight into the mysteries contained within. Fans of the Flash Family may soon see a full speedster roster if Jesse Quick, Max Mercury, and The Flash are able to escape their Speed Force prison.
