The Flash Confirms the Status of a Classic DC Speedster | CBR - CBR - Comic Book Resources

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Flash #759, by Joshua Williamson, Rafa Sandoval, Scott Kolins, Jordi Tarragona, Arif Prianto, Hi-Fi and Steve Wands, on sale now.

In The Flash #759, Barry Allen is out of commission, and Eobard Thawne, the Reverse-Flash, is in control of his body. This has caused some significant problems for the Flash Family, who don't know what is going on.

However, once Bart Allen runs into Flash and has a less than joyful meeting with his grandfather, Impulse realizes that this is not Barry Allen and sets out to confront the imposter, letting the rest of the Flash Family, including Wallace West's Kid Flash, in on the bad news.

As Barry Allen is still trying to find his way back to his body, his consciousness is inside the Speed Force. It is here that he runs into two of his friends and partners from the past in Max Mercury and Jesse Quick. This meeting could be the perfect thing to happen, as it was Max who helped Wally West beat Thawne last time Barry found himself trapped in the Speed Force.

However, this meeting took on a more sorrowful tone when Barry finally recognized the two and asked about one other legendary member of the Flash Family. After realizing who the two of them were, Barry asked if Jesse's dad, Johnny Quick, was in the Speed Force with them as well.

Barry got two equally important answers. First, Jesse told him that Johnny Quick died before the Flashpoint, so he can't be there with them. That is when Max Mercury revealed that they were not "necessarily" in the Speed Force and that Barry is just lost like Wally West was when he was trapped. He needs to find his way back. This dimension, as evidenced by the fact that Max and Jesse first appeared as horrific monsters, is essentially the guilty consciousness of the Flash, and this is where changes he made after Flashpoint reside. And Johnny Quick isn't here because he died long before Flashpoint.

This heroic Johnny Quick was a superhero born on Earth-Two, a young man named Johnny Chambers, who gained his powers through the use of a complex mathematical formula giving him super-speed in 1941's More Fun Comics #71, by Mort Weisinger and Chad Grothpkof. Inspired by Jay Garrick's Flash, Johnny Quick ended up joining the Justice Society and retired when the U.S. government demanded all superheroes reveal their secret identities.

Following Crisis on Infinite Earths, Johnny Quick ended up living on through his daughter, Jesse Quick. She went on to become a superhero in her own right, replacing Flash at one point in time. It was here that Johnny Quick and Max Mercury developed a friendship while working with Wally West, the new Flash. It was Max who finally taught Johnny about the Speed Force.

With this new knowledge, Johnny made the ultimate sacrifice, saving his daughter from Savitar, embracing the Speed Force wholly, and allowing it to consume him in Mark Waid and Humberto Ramos' Impulse #11. Johnny Quick eventually returned, but then died when Barry Allen came back in The Flash: Rebirth, but his death allowed his daughter to carry on his legacy. With this death, Johnny was long gone before Flashpoint changed the DC Universe once again, which explains why he is not where Max, Jesse adn Barry are currently drifting through the ether.
