The Flash movie is deep into production as more set photos have released online, giving fans a closer look at Michael Keaton's Batman and Sasha Calle's Supergirl in the DCEU. One of the next big DC movies coming up from Warner Bros. is The Flash, which has gone through several hoops since 2014. After years of being stuck in development hell, The Flash movie is finally happening, with Ezra Miller returning as Barry Allen. While loosely based on Flashpoint, Barry's actions will ultimately bring about the multiverse, thus involving Keaton's Batman from the Tim Burton films.
Keaton won't be the only one donning the cape and cowl as Ben Affleck's Batman will also be involved in some capacity. However, The Flash will be adding another major DC Comics hero who hasn't been seen cinematically since 1984 as well: Supergirl. Early in 2021, Calle was officially cast as the DCEU's Supergirl. As with most superhero movies today, The Flash is keeping the majority of plot details under wraps - but that hasn't stopped the paparazzi from getting photos of the production.
While the set photos and videos haven't given away everything that's happening in those scenes, it does at least give glimpses of what's happening in The Flash movie overall. Production is expected to go through summer 2021, with the earliest teases coming during DC FanDome in October 2021. Should that happen, it will more than likely give additional context to what has come out through set photos regarding Batman and Supergirl.
Michael Keaton's Bruce Wayne
What's known officially is that The Flash movie will see Keaton's Batman almost 30 years after the events of Batman Returns, meaning that Joel Schumacher's following installments aren't part of that continuity. Keaton was seen in a handful of set photos, but still giving fans a look at Bruce Wayne in the present day. The hair and the make-up department was able to provide Keaton with his original hair-do from Batman and Batman Returns. The biggest difference, of course, is that Bruce's hair is grey/silver now. Anyone who loves to see Bruce makes it abundantly clear how rich he is; The Flash movie includes that aspect.
Several photos were taken of a Mercedes Maybach 6 that is meant to be Bruce's expensive ride. Aside from Bruce's car, it does seem like Keaton's character is involved with whatever story is happening at the courthouse. While not 100% confirmed, one image did see Miller and Keaton together, if that really is Bruce. Since Keaton's announcement, there has been speculation that his Batman will somehow replace Affleck's DCEU version after The Flash movie is said and done. It could be that all of these photos are potentially taking place during the final act. If so, that would explain the brief shot of Barry and Bruce together, unless this is taking place on Earth-89.
Sasha Calle's Supergirl
Right before Calle's Supergirl costume was seen through a dozen set photos, The Flash director Andy Muschietti shared the first look at her House of El chest emblem. While it' heavily based on Zack Snyder's style for Henry Cavill's Superman, the actual suit seems to be based on a specific comic iteration. Calle was spotted being hoisted into the air for wire-work throughout the Flash set photos and clips, meant to be for flying sequences. Even though most of the Supergirl costume photos didn't have her wearing a cape, a few shots did confirm that the Girl of Steel will have one. These days it is common for comic book films to VFX the cape after principal photography.
Whatever harness work Calle was doing likely had to be done without the actual cape for the sake of ease. The actual Supergirl costume, however, seems to be drawing from the Injustice comics. Calle's suit is almost identical to the daughter that Lois and Superman almost had, named Lara Lane-Kent. While still pregnant with Lara, Lois was murdered by Joker, but Superman "meets" their daughter through a dream world. What's interesting about The Flash movie's Supergirl is that when Calle was initially cast, they never referred to her as Kara Zor-El, only as "Supergirl." While that doesn't necessarily mean Calle isn't playing Kara, it's intriguing that she's using Lara's costume.
Ezra Miller's Barry Allen & Kiersey Clemons' Iris West
While Keaton and Calle were spotted in multiple photos, The Flash's primary characters - Miller's Barry and Kiersey Clemons' Iris West - were seen together, too. Several pictures have confirmed that whatever was being filmed took place in Central City, specifically outside a courthouse. Since Barry could be seen talking to reporters right outside the courthouse, it's fair to state this has something to do with his father, Henry Allen, who Ron Livingston will portray instead of Billy Crudup. Even though Reverse-Flash doesn't seem to be part of The Flash movie, it looks like Barry will be spending a great amount of time in the film trying to clear his father's name.
Henry being framed for his wife's murder has always been an essential part of The Flash mythology, which is why it makes sense for Barry's solo film to get to the bottom of it. Whether or not Henry's name is cleared in The Flash or in a future installment remains to be seen. For fans of the Barry and Iris' relationship, it does appear The Flash movie won't waste any time getting them close together. Based on Iris' demeanor in the photos, especially during Barry's press conference, it wouldn't be a stretch to state that she is there for emotional support. Like Henry's comic history, Iris and Barry's romance is a massive part of The Flash's DNA, so it will be intriguing to see where their relationship is at by the movie's end.
The Flash Movie Seemingly Introduces Barry's Flash Ring
A surprising reveal from The Flash set photos is Barry wearing the Flash Ring. In one of the set photos that came out, Miller is sporting a ring that looks way bigger than normal-sized ones. If one zooms in just close enough, the lightning bolt can be seen, which means The Flash at some point will introduce the ring that stores Flash's upgraded costume. It makes sense for Barry to get his Flash Ring in this story specifically, given that Bruce will make him a new suit. Barry's new suit also seems like it would fit easier into a nano-tech-based ring over his original armored suit.
Given this is the first time Miller has been seen wearing the Flash Ring, it's unknown if Barry invents it or that it'll come from Bruce. The Arrowverse's take on Barry's Flash Ring established that Ryan Choi had invented it in Nora West-Allen's future in the pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths timeline. The DCEU counterpart may take a similar route to The Flash season 5, with Keaton's Batman being the one that develops it for Barry after getting his new suit. If these photos are all meant to show parts of The Flash's ending, it makes sense for the ring to be present, as he'll likely not have it initially.
Furthermore, with Supergirl and Bruce being part of the same setting as Barry and Iris, is this meant to be the new DCEU timeline? From everything that has been shared online from these photos, it's difficult to tell what the actual context is, if this is on another Earth or the main DCEU. Hopefully, as The Flash movie gets closer to wrapping production, some official information will be coming out, especially about Keaton's Batman and Calle's Supergirl.
