Warning! Spoilers ahead for The Flash #771!
Wally West just admitted he would sacrifice Reverse Flash in order to save Superman. In the latest issue of The Flash, Wally West finds himself in the body of Reverse Flash, although it's not the normal version with whom he's familiar. The Speed Force has been transporting Wally across time and dimensions and his latest jump sees him land somewhere unknown in the Omniverse.
The Reverse Flash in whose body Wally finds himself is trying out for membership in the Legion of Doom, and has seemingly killed Superman to prove his worthiness. However, the Legion discovers that Superman is not dead, leading Wally to scurry to get himself and Superman out of there. As Wally realizes that the Legion's headquarters are in space, he and Superman are attacked by Lex Luthor. Superman's nemesis blasts through a window, which pulls Wally out into space. Superman is still unconscious and Wally is now in grave danger. Survival in the vacuum of space is a rare occurrence for a human as breathing becomes incredibly hard after fifteen seconds or so. Therefore, Wally is in an extremely sticky situation as he holds onto his final breaths.
In The Flash #771 by Jeremy Adams and Kevin Maguire, Reverse Flash is seen as expendable. In order to rescue the unconscious Superman, Wally needs to let go and allow himself to float out into space. Barry Allen warns Wally that he could die, but as he does this Wally asks if he will survive even if Reverse Flash dies. Barry confirms that Wally will probably hop to the next speedster on his journey. Upon hearing this, Wally is willing to risk jumping out into the expanse of space. There's not much of a moral dilemma for Wally, proving that he thinks of Reverse Flash's life as lesser and that Superman's is more valuable. Wally doesn't even think twice about his actions, which ultimately could have been very cold-blooded.
The way that Wally is thinking is borderline villainous. He shows a complete lack of respect for life, which is very unheroic. Perhaps Green Arrow's worries about him not being fit to be a hero are valid. Barry claims that Wally is better and has learned from his past mistakes, but his actions here don't prove anything of the sort. Wally's mentality is all wrong and unlike the normal superhero mindset. He's more than happy to let Reverse Flash die, even though he hasn't done anything wrong in this instance. Additionally, Wally doesn't even know this version of Reverse Flash.
The implication is that Flash is fine with letting villains die, as long as the heroes are saved. If Wally were in his own body with the risk of dying, he would have backed out of doing anything so risky. But knowing that Reverse Flash's death wouldn't harm him, Wally happily jumps into space. Thankfully, the mission is successful and Wally phases into Lex's ship, where he is able to save Superman. Will this same lack of care for villains life continue in Wally West's run as team leader of the Flash Family? Find out as his adventures continue in The Flash 2021 Annual on June 29.
