SPRINGFIELD (HOI) - Pay disparities will be harder to hide next year because of a new state law.
Businesses with 100 or more employees will be required to submit to the the Illinois Department of Labor information about the gender and ethnicity of their workers, as well as the county where they work to determine if the companies' pay scales are fair and equitable.
Personal, identifiable information won't be seen by the public, state officials said.
The new law, part of the so-called Equity Pillar Legislation adopted in January of this year, was one of the key goals of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus.
In a news release, the Pritzker Administration said businesses with 100 or more workers as of March 23 of this year must apply for an Equal Pay Registration Certificate between March 24 of next year and March 24 of 2024.
Qualifying businesses that started their operations after March 23 of this year must apply for the certificate within three years. Businesses must recertify every two years, according to the new law.
