Another episode in our mini-series revolving around the hated rivalry between the Rangers and Devils. So far, we’ve seen everything from a game-starting line-brawl, to a mini-analysis on John Hynes and his performances against the Devils, to a draft recap comparing both teams. Now, I’ll be hitting on something a bit more specific - An incredible goalie duel between legendary goalies Martin Brodeur and Henrik Lundqvist.
Imagine this: It’s 2010, and the 31-11-1 Devils were set to face the 22-17-6 Rangers, looking to expand on their incredible start to the season. They had split their previous meetings in the year, with the Rangers taking the first game and the Devils taking the second. To fully reflect the difference in times, this was when Zack Parise was leading the Devils against Marian Gaborik’s Rangers.
At the time, the Devils were at the top of the Eastern Conference, while the Rangers were fighting for a spot in the playoffs. In this part of the decade, the Rangers and Devils were both still very competitive in the NHL scope, and had energetic contests, full of energy and violence.

The Game Highlights
The Final Stats
I will not be “recapping” the game, given that I don’t have a full video of it. However, I will mention some final stats and notes to take into account.
- For a Devils-Rangers matchup, this was a very tame game. There were only four penalty minutes against each team, though the Devils were not able to capitalize on 1:30 of 5-on-3.
- The Rangers were able to fire 51 shots at Brodeur, with Callahan, Dubinsky and Gaborik shooting five each. The best chances for the Rangers came from Marian Gaborik (whose shot rolled through the crease) and future Devil Brian Boyle (Breakaway chance)
- Likewise, the Devils fired 45 shots at the Rangers, with Parise and Jay Pandolfo recording six shots each. Brian Rolston had the best chance, with a one-timer from the point.
- At the time, Brodeur and Lundqvist combined to set the NHL record for most saves in a game without allowing a goal. I’m not sure if the record still stands, but I don’t remember any other goalie duels similar to this in recent years.
- Elias’s shootout goal was the only goal of the entire game, as the Rangers were shutout in the shootout as well.
The Aftermath
The Devils eventually clinched 2nd place in the Eastern conference, with a 48-27-7 record. Meanwhile, the Rangers failed to qualify for the playoffs by one point, which makes this game even more momentous.
Sadly, the Devils would fall in the first round 4-1 to the Flyers, who eventually lost in the Stanley Cup Finals.
