The Flash & Other Vancouver-Based Shows Plan Late August Filming Starts - Screen Rant

After months of having production suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, The Flash and a number of Warner Bros. TV shows that film in Vancouver, Canada are set to start filming in the fall. As the global virus has affected multiple industries, TV shows and films have had to stop filming for the safety of everyone involved. In the case of The CW shows, The Flash was one of the hit dramas that couldn't finish their latest season. Riverdale season 4 had to put filming on hold as well when concerns were raised about a team member that was possibly infected. Given that many of CW's shows are filmed in Vancouver, particularly the Arrowverse franchise, it didn't take long until WBTV suspended all ongoing production.

There still exists a lot of uncertainty over how the next season Arrowverse shows is going to look. Details such as episode-order, how many members of the crew can be involved on set without risking infection, to when the new seasons will premiere are still being figured out. With the pandemic still going on, studios and networks have been working on developing new safe health guidelines that would allow production to commence. Now, WBTV is starting to move forward with getting their Vancouver-produced shows back in front of the cameras.

In a new report from Deadline, WBTV is eyeing a late August date for when some of their shows will start filming. According to the trade, the proposed idea still has to be approved by SAG before things can move forward. Should this be greenlit, the plan is to start filming somewhere between August 22-27 and the involved actors would have to arrive in Vancouver two weeks in advance for self-isolation, a demand from British Columbia. Once their quarantine ends, that's when they would be able to start filming. Currently, the WBTV shows that they are looking to get rolling again are mostly Greg Berlanti's shows with both The Flash, Riverdale, as well as the latest Arrowverse spinoff, Superman & Lois.

With Javicia Leslie cast as the new lead for Batwoman, it's likely this DC drama could also be included on that list. Outside of Berlanti Productions, Supernatural actors have earlier this month been heading to Vancouver as they try to start filming the three remaining episodes of their 15th and final season in the middle of August. Given that many of these shows are action-driven, it'll be interesting to see how much that will change due to the new safety guidelines where actors and stunt performers will have to be distanced from each other. Shows like The Flash and Batwoman, while having "season finales" with cliffhangers, had at least 3-4 episodes worth of unfinished storylines left to film. As they're two of the most fight-based series in the Arrowverse, it wouldn't be shocking if more special effects are utilized as a part of the new safety guidelines.

While Black Lightning isn't filmed in Vancouver, it's unclear what will happen to the series for its fourth season. Since the show primarily focuses on characters with super-powers like electricity, they may have it slightly easier in keeping production safe while having to exclude more hand-to-hand combat. What will be even more intriguing to follow is the annual crossover that right now will be set between Superman & Lois and Batwoman as it pertains to how many characters from both shows can actually be involved. At this point, it wouldn't be shocking if the two-part event is pushed back depending on where the pandemic is in the fall.

Since Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow aren't going to air until much later in 2021, it makes sense why they're not part of WBTV's production plans for late-August. For their new and returning shows, The CW will air original episodes starting in January 2021, assuming production is able to flow on without any further suspensions. But given the unpredictability of the coronavirus, should things get even worse in the fall, the current plans can quickly be taken off the table as the pandemic continues to be evaluated. As The Flash and other shows based in Vancouver get ready for next month, more details on shows based in the U.S. will more than likely start to emerge.
