The Flash Brings Back Two Fan-Favorite Speedsters - With a DARK Twist - CBR - Comic Book Resources

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Flash #758, by Joshua Williamson, Christian Duce, Scott Kolins, Luis Guerrero, Hi-Fi and Steve Wands, available now.

In the latest storyline of The Flash, Eobard Thawne has assembled his very own Reverse-Flash Family. Comprised of time-displaced supervillains Gorilla Grodd, several Rogues, the Turtle and the Tornado Twins, this Legion of Zoom proceeded to attack all facets of Barry Allen's life simultaneously. After quickly realizing that his greatest enemy was behind all of this, Barry makes certain that those closest to him are safe in The Flash #758 before going on the offensive. Thawne is always a few steps ahead and this time, the Scarlet Speedster is trying to make sure the villain won't get the upper hand.

Unfortunately, Barry falls right into Thawne's trap. And once Barry is properly defeated by the Legion of Zoom, Reverse-Flash takes his powers to vibrate through objects to the next level by phasing into Barry's body and taking him over. Now, the Flash may look like the Flash, but Thawne is the one behind the wheel. And in the final moments of the issue, Barry's spirit somehow runs into the specters of two forgotten speedsters: Jesse Quick and Max Mercury.

The Flash Max Mercury Jesse Quick Ghosts

Max Mercury and Jesse Quick are both fan-favorite speedsters for long-time DC readers. For years, the two characters were part of Barry Allen's extended Flash Family in the wake of Crisis on Infinite Earths, running alongside the likes of, Wally West and Jay Garrick whenever the situation called for it. However, both characters ended up becoming casualties of 2011's New 52 relaunch. After DC streamlined its continuity with this reboot, Barry Allen was made the sole Flash, while characters like Wally West, Jay Garrick, Max Mercury and Jesse Quick were erased from history.

However, the DC Rebirth era began to bring back old elements from the past of the DC Universe. The return of Wally West kick-started the entire event, and Jay Garrick has made a few appearances since. And now, it looks like Jess and Max might be coming next.

At the end of The Flash #758, Reverse-Flash possesses Barry's body, and the Scarlet Speedster becomes a passenger trapped in a place he doesn't fully understand. Inside Eobard Thawne, Barry is in a place that looks like the Speed Force, but he also knows that it isn't the Speed Force. While there, he comes under attack by the two decaying corpses of Max Mercury and Jesse Quick.

Of course, with the manipulations done to the timeline, Barry doesn't seem to recognize his old friends, yet. Eventually, his memories of the two speedsters could be restored, just like what happened with Wally in DC Universe: Rebirth #1. For the time being, the bigger question is where is Barry trapped, and why are Max and Jesse there?

With Barry now controlled by Thawne, it's possible the superhero is trapped in the Negative Speed Force. This could explain why Jesse and Max appear dead, especially if Thawne trapped them in his own Speed Force. Right now, it sure looks like the living corpses of the two speedsters are villainous -- but could they somehow be saved? If Barry ends up remembering his friends, he could move Heaven and Earth to get them out and finally bring them back into the Flash Family. But first, he'll have to outrun the ghosts of his past.
