DCEU Theory: The Suicide Squad Should Introduce the Multiverse (Not The Flash) - Screen Rant

The Flash is set to debut in 2022, bringing the concept of the multiverse to the DCEU when there's every reason to have The Suicide Squad do so instead. After an impressively long time spent in development, the Flash movie is finally set for a 2022 release and looks to be a pretty major entry in the DC cinematic canon. News that AndrĂ©s Muschietti's The Flash could feature the return of Michael Keaton's first on-screen Batman rattled the internet last week, with the actor reportedly in talks to reprise his late-'80s/early-'90s role as the Dark Knight. How will the film manage to bring Keaton's Batman into the fold? With the DC multiverse, of course.

The same reports that claimed Keaton could be returning also claimed Warner Bros. is looking to introduce the multiverse to the DCEU as a major part of The Flash. The concept refers to multiple different DC universes with their own timelines and was originally created for comic book writers to craft their own stories without having to worry about one overarching continuity. Now, the multiverse looks set to appear on-screen, ushered in by Ezra Miller's Flash and Keaton's Batman – who in the upcoming film is said to exist within an alternate timeline that Flash stumbles into when time-travelling. Its introduction into the DCEU brings with it the opportunity for multiple new characters to appear, including Flashpoint Batman who could even show up in The Flash. Whatever it brings, the multiverse development will be a significant one for DC, helping the company step up its efforts to compete with Marvel's dominance of the superhero genre.

For this to be a success, the multiverse's potential to fundamentally change the DCEU necessitates the right introduction. And while The Flash makes a lot of sense for its debut, so does James Gunn's upcoming soft reboot The Suicide Squad. Multiple universes means the DCEU is about to get a whole lot bigger, especially considering the Arrowverse's recent Crisis On Infinite Earths event, with its Ezra Miller Flash cameo that appeared to suggest the TV shows will become part of the same DCEU multiverse as the movies. Such a big shift for the DCEU needs to be introduced properly, and The Suicide Squad provides a great opportunity to do just that.

Firstly, the film will have a built-in explanation for how its story fits with the previous Suicide Squad movie. Following David Ayer’s poorly-reviewed Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. decided to bring in Guardians Of The Galaxy director James Gunn to take another shot at bringing the villainous gang to the big screen. Now, with Gunn's soft reboot set to arrive in August of this year, fans are eager to see how the film, which brings back most but not all the characters from Ayer's original Suicide Squad, will explain its timeline in relation to the previous movie. But with the multiverse in play, The Suicide Squad could simply exist within an alternate universe to the original film – quickly solving its continuity problem.

Perhaps the best reason for DC to debut its multiverse with The Suicide Squad is timing. Marvel is also preparing its own take on multiple universes for 2022 – the same year The Flash is scheduled to launch. Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness is set to capitalize on the alternate timeline concepts introduced in the first Doctor Strange and Avengers: Endgame. With Marvel and DC set to introduce multiverses in 2022, launching its own version a year earlier would help DC get the jump on their longtime rivals, and using James Gunn's 2021 movie offers the best chance. What's more, audiences are now anticipating the DCEU's multiverse to arrive with The Flash. Using it as part of The Suicide Squad would help jumpstart DC's plan for superhero cinematic dominance by giving fans a real surprise without compromising the company's strategy for the future.
