The Flash: The Red Boots Hint At Jay Garrick Twist | Screen Rant - Screen Rant

In DC's teaser trailer for The Flash, a shot featuring a pair of red boots could hint at a plot twist involving Jay Garrick. While the teaser features Ezra Miller playing two different characters bearing a resemblance to Barry Allen, it's possible that one of them could actually be a different Flash altogether. The evidence specifically hints at Jay Garrick, aka the Flash of DC's Golden Age of comics.

Jay Garrick was the Flash of DC's Golden Age of comics, eventually being retconned as the Flash of Earth-2, while Barry Allen was the primary Earth's Flash. Additionally, he was further retconned to be a veteran hero of WWII while Barry was the Flash of the modern era where they both exist on the same timeline. Having a magically extended life, Jay will often team up with Barry in the comics, offering his support and expertise when he can. Wearing his iconic silver helmet and red boots with yellow wings, it's possible that his role is being teased for The Flash with these new red boots, rather than there being two Barry Allens.

While the red boots/yellow wings combo is a little ridiculous and somewhat outdated for a superhero costume of the modern era (especially on the big screen), the red boots in The Flash trailer get yellow lightning bolts spray-painted on them in the teaser. Thanks to these boots, it's possible that Jay is being set up for a DCEU debut working alongside Barry Allen in his upcoming multiversal adventure. This could potentially be a modern compromise for Jay's classic boots, which would indicate that Ezra Miller will be playing the two different Flashes simultaneously (Barry and Jay). This would also suggest that Jay's film origins would be reverted to the concept of him being a Flash from another Earth (with the added twist of being Barry's doppelganger).

Jay-Garrick-Flash-Comics

It would certainly be a pretty dynamic twist if the other Flash featured in the teaser were indeed Jay Garrick. On the CW's The Flash series starring Grant Gustin as Barry Allen, fans have become familiar with the Arrowverse's version of Jay played by John Wesley Shipp (the original Barry Allen actor from the 1990 series). Furthermore, Jay also serves as the doppelganger for Barry's own father in the Arrowverse, so it's not a stretch for Jay to be a mirror of Barry Allen himself in the DCEU.

In any case, with The Flash promising multiversal travel (such as Barry attempting to recruit Michael Keaton's Batman from the Tim Burton universe of Batman films), Jay Garrick would be a welcome addition to the DCEU's Flash mythos. Rather than adding to the confusion of there being two Barrys running around (literally), it would certainly be exciting to have Jay and Barry working side by side along with Sasha Calle's Supergirl and Keaton's Dark Knight as they work to stop whatever multiversal danger lies ahead for The Flash when it releases in November of 2022.
