The Flash Movie Risks Repeating Spider-Man's Uncle Ben Problem - Screen Rant

A new trailer for the DCEU’s upcoming The Flash reveals that the movie runs the risk of repeating a key Uncle Ben mistake shared by the Spider-Man franchise. The trailer shows that a storyline involving Barry Allen’s mother will be featured in the movie, indicating that Allen will use his powers to go back in time to save her from an untimely death. Although this story is an important and well-known part of the Flash’s lore, it has previously been explored in other non-DCEU media. Re-using the storyline might run the risk of following in the footsteps of how Spider-Man writers have handled the death of Uncle Ben.

As avid audiences of the web-slinging hero will know, multiple big-screen incarnations of the character have included the story of Uncle Ben’s death. Both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s versions of the character had to endure the loss on-screen, and the story has also been featured or referenced in most of the Spider-Man animated shows released. While important to Spidey’s story, the franchise has rehashed Uncle Ben’s role in Parker’s life so many times that audiences have accepted it as a given occurrence, lessening the moment's emotional impact. The Flash may be falling into this same trap.

Both the popular CW television series The Flash and the animated film Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox included the story of Barry’s mother being saved from the accident which had previously killed her. Each of these adapted the story from the 2011 Flashpoint comic arc and were well-received by audiences. But after recently seeing the story play out twice, and in the case of the Arrowverse seeing it play out under a major spotlight, the DCEU is running the risk of over-exposing a pivotal moment—one that plays an important role in making the Scarlet Speedster one of comics' most important heroes.

The Flash Movie

The biggest mistake the Spider-Man film franchises made in using Uncle Ben's story multiple times was that the different adaptations followed each other very closely. The initial film in the Sam Raimi trilogy came out in 2002 and the storyline was reused in The Amazing Spider-Man a mere 10 years later. The Raimi trilogy was very popular and is (mostly) well-remembered by devoted Spidey followers to this day. The Uncle Ben story in TASM was not very different from how it was portrayed previously, leaving audiences less affected by Ben’s death in the reboot. The DCEU is risking the same lackluster reception to The Flash film by using a familiar storyline so close on the heels of its previous iterations.

This would not be the first time a DC screen adaptation has made the Uncle Ben mistake. Many Batman movies over the years have portrayed the deaths of Thomas and Martha Wayne so many times that fans no longer want to see it. Even Joker, meant to be a standalone focused on the Caped Crusaders greatest nemesis, found a way to include Batman’s famous origin story. Having already drawn criticism for this repetitiveness in the Batman franchise, DC should be wary about how the Nora Allen storyline is presented going forward. Although some may be unfamiliar with the details, seasoned DC audiences might be bored by yet another re-telling.

It is possible that The Flash will avoid the Uncle Ben mistake by presenting the Flashpoint storyline from a unique angle or with a new twist. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse used a story that was nearly identical to the Uncle Ben/Parker story, yet managed to present it differently enough that the death of Miles Morales’ uncle felt fresh and emotionally affecting. The material in the easter-egg filled The Flash preview from DC FanDome was not enough to discern full details of the film's narrative, so it remains to be seen whether the writers have created a way to set their version of the story apart from the ones that came before it.
