Even Wally West’s Kids Like Batman More Than The Flash - Screen Rant

Warning: contains spoilers for The Flash #775!

It's no secret that Batman is a supremely popular superhero, but he's also popular in-universe - to the point where even the Flash's children prefer Batman over their own father. Wally West, officially taking over the role of the Flash from Barry Allen (who himself took over the role from Golden-Age Jay Garrick) is a rarity in superhero comics in that he has a spouse and children - who all know about his secret heroic identity. But in The Flash #775, written by Jeremy Adams with art by Fernando Pasiron and colors by Jeromy Cox, Wally isn't the true role model for his kids...that honor goes to Batman.

At the start of the issue, Superman, the Flash and Mr. Terrific examine a curious purple glaive embedded in a busy intersection of Central City. Superman attempts to pry the glaive out of the street, but without success. Wally is astounded that someone with the immense strength of Superman can fail to lift what appears to be a simple weapon from the ground. Superman angrily snaps at Flash (this uncharacteristic outburst by Superman a clear sign that the object is magical in nature). He quickly apologizes; "For whatever reason, that really frustrated me."

But Wally West is quick to forgive Superman, and he understands the feeling well, especially as a father to young children. "I used to feel the same way when my kids didn't pick up their toys. I've almost broken my foot on their Batwheels half a dozen times." The fact that the Flash's children, Jai and Iris West, both have Batman-themed toys speaks volumes about the popularity of the caped crusader in-universe.

In current comics continuity, Batman is not exactly on good terms with the police (the halcyon days of the Silver Age Batman working alongside the Gotham City Police Department - in the daylight, no less - have long since passed). Yet the Dark Knight is popular enough to warrant merchandise aimed at children. The 'Batwheels', perhaps analogous to Hotwheels in the DC Universe, prove that Batman is quite marketable, and it's reasonable to assume that the Flash has no similar merchandise associated with him - for if Wally West had the opportunity to use his brand, he would (he does have a museum, after all).

It's worth noting that Wally's children have inherited his powers, and thus can engage in crimefighting activities next to their father. If that's the case, perhaps they simply don't want to play with any Flash-related toys when they have the real thing at home. Batman may be popular, but the Flash is a loving father - something Bruce struggles to be with his own son, Damian Wayne.
