The Flash's Rogues Died In Underworld Unleashed. How Did They Come Back? - CBR - Comic Book Resources

Like most characters in a superhero universe, most of the Flash's Rogues have found themselves on the other side of death's door at one point or another, only to be revived by the actions of someone else. But unlike most villains, the Rogues briefly ended up fully in control of the DC Universe's greatest devil, and they were only saved by their greatest enemy.

Now, we're taking a closer look at how the Flash Rogues died in Mark Waid, Howard Porter and Dan Green's Underworld Unleashed, and how they were ultimately restored to life.

HOW WERE THE FLASH ROGUES KILLED?

The Flash Rogues are some of the most distinct villains in the DC Universe, a collection of skilled and dangerous criminals who utilize enhanced and specific weaponry to keep up with the Flash, the Fastest Man Alive. But following the death of Barry Allen, many of the Rogues briefly took a step back from crime. However, after spending years at the bottom of the social totem pole of the world's super-villains, the technologically advanced and mentally unstable Abra Kadabra was able to convince five of his former compatriots -- Captain Cold, Heat Wave, Mirror Master, Weather Wizard and Captain Boomerang -- to claim their long-desired glory as part of a new plan his unnamed master had constructed. The five were ordered to simultaneously attack specific locations around the United States, all expecting a minor explosion that they then could escape from.

However, the explosions were far more powerful than the five had expected, and all of them were consumed in the ensuing flames, killing them instantly. As they died, Abra Kadabra's master, the demonic Neron, revealed that they had achieved their long-sought glory, albeit as heralds of his coming. The five flames created a pentagram across the United States, helping unleash Neron and set the events of Underworld Unleashed into motion. While many other villains would get their own offers of power from Neron, another former Rogue, the Trickster, was able to help manipulate events so that Shazam could defeat Neron and nullify much of his power over the villains he'd bargained with. But this didn't resurrect the Rogues, who were left in Neron's grasp.

HOW DID THE ROGUES COME BACK TO LIFE?

Sometime after Underworld Unleashed, the Flash finds himself confronting a new apparent attack from the Rogues in Mark Waid, Brian Augustyn, Paul Ryan, and John Nyberg's "Hell to Pay" storyline in The Flash. But unlike how they previously acted, the Rogues taunt Flash with grim words and actively aim to kill civilians, which goes against their old code. But when Flash is forced to use his powers to literally disarm his enemies, Weather Wizard merely grows back the arm Flash was able to take off. The Flash comes to the conclusion that they're being controlled by Neron. While their souls may be trapped in hell with him, Neron can use control of their bodies, amplify their tech, and cause untold suffering with them. Contacting former Rogue turned ally Pied Piper, Flash gets one of the enchanted candles Neron created to try and entice villains to hear his offer for their souls, using it to visit Neron.

Neron ends up trading the souls of the Rouges to Wally in exchange for the love her feels for his fiancee, Linda Park. Flash returns to the Earth and is able to return the souls of the five Rogues to their bodies, before quickly arresting them. But the sheer purity of the love shared between Wally and Linda -- who is revealed to have made the same deal in a bid to help Flash save the city -- is too much for Neron to contain, and its purity burns him. This forces Neron back to Earth, where he begs Wally and Linda to take their love back. The pair only agree to it if Neron restores the city  and the lives that were destroyed in the Rogue's attack.

This successfully saves the city and even fully restores the Rogues, who Flash decides to give a certain amount of freedom because of their time in Hell to give them another chance at life. It wasn't long before the Rogues were working together again, and they even banded together to procure a mystical artifact to keep them from being targeted by Neron in the future. While some would be majorly affected by the story, others adjusted back to the DC Universe quickly and resumed doing what they do best: fighting the Flash.
