FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) -- Amazon, the number two company on the Fortune 500 list, is coming to Fort Wayne and bringing hundreds of jobs with it.
"Amazon reached out to our community for this," says city of Fort Wayne spokesman John Perlich.
Amazon announced plans for a 150,000 square foot building that could be expanded to 240,000 square feet near the airport.
The 20-acre parcel will house a new delivery station' for Amazon Logistics, touted as a facility to more quickly move packages the final mile of their destination to people's homes and businesses.
The project came to fruition quickly, thanks in part to the city's public-private partnership shell building program.
"The Redevelopment Commission for the city partners with private entities to get buildings constructed so that, in this case, Amazon calls and says we're looking for this amount of square footage, we need other certain things, and we were able to provide that because the building is already built and ready to go," he says.
The Amazon delivery station is expected to employ several hundred people with full and part-time jobs that pay a minimum of $15 an hour with a variety of benefits packages.
Even though the city's unemployment numbers have dropped a bit since the spike because of the coronavirus, lots of people are still out of work right now.
"So this could provide an opportunity for someone to get a fresh start, someone who may be just wanting to start getting into the work field, this could be a start for them. So we think it will ultimately be a win for our community," Perlich says.
While it hasn't been announced how much Amazon will spend on the project or how much impact it will have on the economy, we do know Amazon did not ask for tax incentives and did do its research on location.
"We're right in the middle of Indianapolis, Detroit, Cleveland, Chicago. So from a growth standpoint, from a location standpoint, when you're thinking about logistcs and trying to get those packages delivered in those final stages, I think Amazon looked at Fort Wayne and saw it as a natural fit," Greater Fort Wayne Inc.'s Ellen Cutter says.
With the Walmart milk processing plant and now the Amazon delivery station, Fort Wayne will have the number one and number two companies on the Fortune 500 list in town.
Economic leaders say that will help them market the region to other large companies.
The Amazon delivery station is expected to be up and running by the end of the year.
