WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Flash: The Fastest Man Alive #9, by Jay Baruchel, Riley Rossmo, Ivan Plascencia and Rob Leigh, on sale now.
Flash: The Fastest Man Alive is a collection of short stories taking place outside of the main DC Universe continuity. While many of the series' stories have been lighthearted, issue #9 features a story by Jay Baruchel, Riley Rossmo and Ivan Plascencia that has major, dark implications for the future of the Flash, the Speed Force and the entire DC Multiverse.
Titled Ghosts of the Speed Force, the story begins with Barry explaining that he senses something wrong with the Speed Force. Next, the issue shows an explosion at Fort Kenilworth Military Base -- located just outside of Central City -- where a rapidly disintegrating speedster is wreaking havoc just before jumping into the body of an elderly cleaning woman. After Batman does a little bit of semi-legal surveillance, the Flash realizes that something related to the Speed Force is taking over people's bodies, but since these bodies are incapable of controlling the power, it ultimately overwhelms them and they are killed in the process.
Barry sets out to put a stop to the rampaging cleaning woman, but not before the ghost jumps from her to a small girl. When the Flash tries to help this girl, the being explains to Barry that this was all a trap. The spirit is that of a long dead speedster looking to possess Barry's body, since it will be able to handle the Speed Force. At first, the hero runs, but then recalling something Iris said earlier, he stops and is able to exorcise the ghost. As the issue ends, Barry goes to meet back up with Iris at a party.
The Speed Force is the mass of kinetic energy that exists outside of space and time and is the source of not only Barry Allen's powers but those of the majority of DC's speedsters. However, there's only one Speed Force and it applies to the entire multiverse, meaning every speedster in every reality taps into the same Speed Force. Similarly, when Speedsters die they pass into the Speed Force and become one with it.
This means, although Flash: Fastest Man Alive is not part of DC's main continuity, the Speed Force in this story is that of the main DCU. This new interpretation of the Speed Force then indicates dead speedsters -- or Flashes from the past or other realities -- could come to the main DC Universe using the force. If so, this opens the main DC Universe to another avenue of attack. Well, after the Justice League deals with Perpetua destroying various other realities, that is.
