The Flash Gets a NOIR Makeover in Stylish Fan Art | Screen Rant - Screen Rant

Barry Allen, the man who can outrun everything but the past, has received a hard-boiled update from some new fan art. The gritty, art deco look, courtesy of Christopher Brändström, transported the Flash another time in what looks like an awesome Elseworlds tale.

Artist Christopher Brändström posted his noirish take on the Flash on Reddit. The design does bear a few similarities to another hardboiled character - Spider-Man Noir. Both characters are clad in black, knitted sweaters under button-up jackets, and both characters also feature aviator goggles (though the Flash lacks Spider-Man Noir's trenchcoat). Brändström does add a few flourishes to the costume to set it apart from its Spider-Verse predecessor. First off, the Flash is holding his aviator goggles in his hand. The character also has an open head mask revealing a tuff of hair that gives this version of the Flash a more '90s feel but works perfectly well in the dour and grim esthetic. There's also just a glimpse of a lightning bolt patch on Flash's left sleeve, adding a perfect amount of detail to the picture, and implying this Flash is part of some organization (Perhaps STAR Labs is this world's answer to the Manhattan Project). Dusty jeans and dirty work boots complete the character, making it easy to picture this Flash chasing down leads in the back alleys of Central City.

While the Flash has seen his fair share of dark and gritty alternate realities (Flashpoint, anyone?), a noir universe isn't among them. Instead, it's DC's competitor Marvel that popularized the hard-boiled superhero genre with Marvel Noir, a 2009 line of comics featuring a line of neo-noir reboots. The most popular entry of this line is the aforementioned Spider-Man Noir, who reappeared during the Spider-Verse crossover and was subsequently voiced by Nicholas Cage for the Into the Spider-Verse movie.

While the Flash Noir has several similarities to Spider-Man's hardboiled counterparts, Brändström's work alone does make a compelling argument why the DC Universe could use its own noir reality. The closest thing DC really has to a noir universe is DC Comic Bombshells, which depicts the heroines of the DC Universe in a retro 40's stylings. However, while the period is similar, the look and tone are far removed from the gritty, unsentimental feel of a noir film Hopefully, Brändström's fan art will lead to the Flash - and other DC Comics figures - diving into a deep dark world of noir sooner rather than later.
