John Fox: Who Is The Flash of the Future DC Universe? | CBR - CBR - Comic Book Resources

More than any other comic book superhero, The Flash is a character defined by timeline and legacy. The nature of the DC hero has seen the mantle of the Scarlet Speedster be passed from hero to hero throughout the generations from the Golden Age to the modern day and the far future.

One hero who took up the Flash mantle in two future timelines was John Fox, a man from the future who eventually gained super speed. His name further references the Flash legacy, combining the names Barry Allen and Wally West writer John Broome and Jay Garrick co-creator Gardner Fox. Although he might not be as major a character as he was in the '90s, he was instrumental in taking down one of the Flash’s deadliest villains and starred in one of DC’s best ‘90s crossover events as the Flash of the Justice Legion Alpha. Now, we're taking a closer look at this Flash of two futures.

WHO IS THE FUTURE FLASH?

john fox flash

Created by Mark Waid and Mike Parobeck, Jonathan Fox first appeared in Flash Special #1 in 1990. He was a historian in the far-flung future of the 27th century in the year 2645. This timeline was attacked by a mutagenic Flash rogue named Manfred Mota, whom the Flashes of the past had all dealt with at different points in time. After laying waste to the unprepared future, Mota forced the Central City Academy of Science to send John Fox back into the past to get the aid of at least one of the Flashes. This trip didn’t work, but it did somehow give John super-speed. Inspired by the heroes of the past and combining elements of their old costumes, John became the new Flash. His defeat of Mota and career as the Flash of the 27th century didn’t give him lasting heroism, however, as the arrival of Speed Metal robots left John without a job.

After Wally West got stuck in John's future, Fox found new purpose when he had to fill in for Wally West in the present-day. Unfortunately, he was unable to stop the new Ice Age caused by Abra Kadabra and Polaris, but a returning Wally was able to help him reverse it. This was all after John had started romancing Wally's girlfriend Linda, of course. Speed Metal also found John and accused him of violating his era’s strict rules about time travel. This left him a wanted man in the present and his own future, so John sought another time in which time travel wasn’t illegal. This led him to the 853rd century, home of a vastly different JLA.

DC One Million

John Fox was a central character in the DC One Million crossover event, which featured the heroes of the 853rd century. The metatextual reason for this premise is that the 853rd century would be when the one-millionth issue of a regularly schedule DC comic book would be published. This future was protected by the various Justice Legions, with the Justice Legion Alpha being the future version of the Justice League. Fittingly, the team found its Flash in John Fox, who had taken refuge there after running away from Speed Metal. The plot of the Grant Morrison-spearheaded event begins when the Justice Legion Alpha travels back in time to meet the present-day Justice League. This is to celebrate the ensuing return of Superman-Prime, the still-living future version of the present-day Superman, who had exiled himself to maintain the Sun’s proper functions.

John's main role in the story involves him having his temporal gauntlets altered, which temporarily trapped the Justice Legion in the past by hindering their ability to travel in time. It was also revealed that John was a descendant of both Wally West and Kyle Rayner. Since then, however, the character hasn't seen too much action. This obscurity has only been exacerbated by the jettisoning of much of the Flash legacy since Barry Allen's return and his subsequent rebooting of reality with Flashpoint. However, with John Fox and the Justice Legion showing up in the pages of  Justice League. While he still doesn't play an outsized role in the current DC Universe, there is truly no telling when this time-traveler might pop up again.
