Who Dies In The Flash Season 8? Character Funeral Tease & Theories - Screen Rant

One of several Arrowverse characters could be on the chopping block after a tease of a major death in The Flash season 8. On Instagram, Iris West-Allen actress posted an image of her character dressed for a funeral. The show doing a funeral scene in season 8 was reinforced by the inclusion of the hashtag, #funeralattire, and the phrase “till death do us part”.

A funeral being held in an upcoming episode of The Flash season 8 raises speculation about a major character being killed off during the show’s next arc. It’s worth noting that the last death tease didn’t actually stick. It was established at the beginning of The Flash season 8’s Armageddon event that Joe West (Jesse L. Martin) died offscreen. This would have been a shocking twist, but just as many expected, this death was undone by the end of the five-part crossover. After uncovering a scheme by Reverse-Flash (Tom Cavanagh), Team Flash put an end to his time travel shenanigans and restored the timeline, thus bringing Joe back to life.

Of course, Joe’s death turning out to be a fakeout doesn’t mean that the same will be true for season 8’s funeral hint. After all, the show has a history of killing off major characters, regardless of how important they may be to Barry (Grant Gustin) and the others. Over the years, the show has lost a number of favorites, including Firestorm, Henry Allen, H.R., Harry, Nash, Eddie Thawne, and more. Another character could potentially join the list of casualties at some point in The Flash season 8. Here are the characters who might fall in the season’s remaining episodes.

Jay Garrick

With Jay Garrick returning for at least one episode, the series could kill off John Wesley Shipp one more time in The Flash season 8. Two of his three characters – Henry Allen and Earth-90’s Barry Allen – have already died. Over the course of the series, his last remaining Arrowverse character has survived some big scares. Some thought his days were numbered when Godspeed set his sights on him in The Flash season 7, but Jay Garrick managed to come out of the fight in one piece. He may find himself in danger once again when The Flash dives into its next time travel story. A promo for episode 6 and episode 5’s ending scene confirmed that Bart (Jordan Fisher) and Nora (Jessica Parker Kennedy) will be embarking on a trip through time. Since Jay has important relationships with both Barry and Bart, his death could have a deep emotional impact on both characters.

Cecile Horton

A character whose death would rock the Flash family even more profoundly than Jay would be Danielle Nicolet’s Cecile Horton. Considering how close she’s been to the main characters over the last few seasons, Cecile’s death would be a massive tragedy that could disrupt the team in a significant way. Cecile meeting an end in the near future could also connect with The Flash showrunner Eric Wallace's comments about what the show has planned for Joe West. It was said earlier that Joe will develop an “incredibly different perspective on life” that will lead him to make a ”really big choice”. For the time being, it’s unclear if this comment was about Joe telling Barry not to let Reverse-Flash die in Armageddon’s final episode, or something that hasn’t happened yet. If it pertains to an upcoming event, it could relate to a death in Joe’s future.

Joe West

Many believed – and rightfully so – that Joe’s death in Armageddon wouldn’t be permanent. Since the show wasn’t willing to kill him in the crossover, some may assume that the series won’t go there at all. But, it’s important to note that Joe dying for good in Armageddon would never have worked. He had played such an instrumental role in Barry’s life that having him die offscreen would have been a huge disservice to the character and the fans. So while the show couldn’t let this one stick, it did provide a taste of how deeply Barry and Team Flash would be affected if Joe were to really die. Joe sacrificing himself to save Barry, Iris, or one of his grandchildren could fundamentally change the series ahead of The Flash season 9.

Kristen Kramer

Cecile’s death isn’t the only tragedy that could kick off a new story for Joe West. There’s also the matter of Kristen Kramer (Carmen Moore), with Joe formed a bond with in season 7. Since The Flash wrapped up her metahuman storyline, her conflict with Killer Frost, and her redemption arc, the show is now free to move on from the character. Killing her off could help launch Joe’s next story in a way that wouldn’t rob the show of an indispensable character or a member of The Flash’s core cast. Kramer’s death would be consequential but not necessarily game-changing. It’s for this reason that she makes more sense than some of the other candidates. The Flash may not be willing to part with someone as important as Joe, Cecile, or Caitlin. And it may have so much more it wants to do with Chester, Allegra, and Bart Allen's Impulse before ending any of their Arrowverse stories.

Eddie Thawne

The Flash Eddie Thawne and Iris West

Eddie (Rick Cosnett) is already in the Arrowverse, but his return to The Flash makes a second death a real possibility. Several years after dying to stop Reverse-Flash in the season 1 finale, Eddie will return in a recurring capacity for The Flash season 8. The episode 6 promo revealed that it’ll factor into the show’s time travel plot. Apparently, Bart and Nora will meet him when they go back to 2014 (the timeframe of The Flash season 1). As for how and why he’ll appear in more than one episode, it may be that the speedster duo will inadvertently change his fate with their actions. If so, they could create their own Flashpoint, which could be a timeline where Eddie doesn’t die. Alternatively, Eddie could somehow follow them to 2022.

Regardless of how his return happens, Eddie Thawne will indeed be around for a multi-episode arc. During this time, he could prove to be a dependable ally to Team Flash against whatever villain the heroes will be up against next. Since he’s supposed to be dead, his continued presence could pose a threat to the timeline. If that’s the case, settings things right may call for Eddie to die again. Eddie’s story in The Flash season 8 could end with yet another ultimate sacrifice from the character.
