The Flash: Does Grant Gustin's New Contract Hint at the Show's End? - CBR

In the midst of The Flash Season 8's midseason break, actor Grant Gustin renewed his contract to reprise his starring role as Barry Allen in the long-running Arrowverse series for a ninth season. According to reports, rather than re-sign for a multi-season contract, Gustin opted to only renew for a single season. Though there is no indication that this means The Flash Season 9 will be the series' last, it does suggest that the ninth season could see a seismic shift for the show and Barry's presence in the Arrowverse.

With the launch of its ninth season, The Flash will officially become the longest-running series in the Arrowverse, exceeding Arrow's eight-season run. This isn't to say that The Flash has begun to show signs of its age and noticeably changed up since its earlier seasons. Over the past several seasons, major original cast members Carlos Valdes and Tom Cavanagh have departed from the show as series regulars, while the supporting cast has grown more prominent, including new cast members, including Kayla Compton's Allegra Garcia and Brandon McKnight's Chester P. Runk.

This suggests that should The Flash continue beyond its ninth season, it might do so without Gustin at the helm, instead focusing on the new generation of Central City superheroes that Barry has personally inspired over the years. The Arrowverse has attempted to pass the baton over to the supporting cast of an established show before, with Arrow's final season featuring a backdoor pilot for the planned spinoff series Green Arrow and the Canaries. With this plan ultimately unsuccessful, The Flash may simply retain its branding rather than launch a separate spinoff should Gustin not return beyond Season 9.

There is, of course, always the chance that Gustin could opt to renew his contract beyond Season 9, simply not interested in a multi-season commitment at this point in his career. The other distinct possibility is that The Flash Season 9 could indeed be the series' last, with the network likely mulling their options on how to carry on with the Arrowverse. The added wrinkle in the contract renewal negotiations is The CW looking for a potential buyer and the network may be hedging its own bets as it faces a major crossroads in regards to its future ownership. There is speculation that a possible network sale could impact The CW's original programming, potentially killing the Arrowverse following its current contractual commitments. Gustin's contract renewal could be a harbinger of this end should these reports prove accurate.

Eight seasons in and The Flash boasts the second-highest viewership in the Arrowverse as it currently stands, consistently second only to Superman & Lois, and with those numbers The CW may be interested in continuing the show without its original star. However, more than just the future of the Arrowverse, the entire future of The CW is hanging on uncertainty.

Grant Gustin has been a fixture in the shared television universe as Barry Allen since Arrow Season 2 and The Flash has catapulted the Arrowverse into a true shared universe as the first in a string of interconnected television series. Gustin may not be long in continuing to wear the Scarlet Speedster's iconic boots and the Arrowverse faces a murky future without him.

The Flash Season 8 returns Wednesday, March 9 at 8pm ET/PT on The CW.
