Warning: spoilers ahead for Infinite Frontier #3!
In Infinite Frontier #3, Barry Allen aka the Flash is being exploited by Darkseid. In the first issue, Barry stumbled across the Omega Planet while on his multiversal mission for Justice Incarnate. However, unbeknownst to him, Darkseid and Psycho-Pirate have been operating on the Omniverse’s new planet, preparing for a new Crisis. Barry was captured and has since been working under Psycho-Pirate’s manipulative control. At the end of the first issue, it was teased that Barry would be a major factor in recruiting and finding members of Darkseid’s new army. This makes complete sense because of his ability to quickly travel between realities.
The Flash is a mantle that has been taken on by many characters. Arguably, Barry Allen is the most notable, but he wasn’t the original Flash. Everything started with Jay Garrick, aka the Flash of DC’s Golden Age. As a member of the Justice Society of America, Jay would sprint around as the World’s Fastest Man, saving people in need. Later, Jay would take a back seat as Barry was introduced to the comics. However, the original Flash wasn’t forgotten. He took on more of a mentor role to Barry, who admired his predecessor heavily. Before Barry became the Flash, he even read Flash Comics about Jay and his adventures. Barry, like most real-life fans, aspired to be like the Flash, but it turns out his abiding faith in his mentor is the kind of weakness Darkseid loves to exploit.
In Infinite Frontier #3 by Joshua Williamson, Xermanico, Paul Pelletier, Tom Derenick, and Jesus Merino, Psycho-Pirate uses Barry Allen’s admiration for Jay Garrick to further Darkseid’s plan, persuading Barry that his mentor is asking him to run. Their scenes together are colored in classic comic book style, akin to the drawings when Jay and Barry were first introduced. While Barry would of course refuse to help Darkseid, and is a smart hero who would otherwise guess he's being used, his overriding belief in Jay makes him easy to manipulate as Psycho-Pirate puts words into Jay’s mouth. Barry knows that he has to save the multiverse, but is unaware of himself being manipulated.
It’s clear that Darkseid needs the Flash to run extremely fast, most likely to power whatever he’s got planned. Extreme amounts of energy are shown to be siphoned off of Barry, who has used similar devices - like the Cosmic Treadmill - in the past to travel between realities. By identifying one of Barry’s few psychological weaknesses, Psycho-Pirate is able to motivate him to run faster than ever before. It should be noted that Barry does remember, at least a bit, where he was last, exemplifying how essential it is that Psycho-Pirate choose the perfect illusion to keep him motivated.
So, how on Earth is Flash supposed to escape, given that his mind is being clouded by his captor’s manipulations? Barry will never lose faith in Jay, and his own heroic instincts are near inexhaustible, suggesting he'll need to be saved by his Justice Incarnate allies rather than being able to free himself with an act of will - after all, he's choosing to run, not being forced. Darkseid and Psycho-Pirate’s manipulation is extremely clever, using Flash's faith in Jay Garrick to push him into giving his all for an evil plan that threatens the multiverse itself.
