NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Heavy rainfall on Saturday morning has promoted a Storm 5 Alert, lasting until 8 p.m.
While the rain has subsided on Saturday afternoon, the ground is so saturated that any additional rain will bring a flash flooding concern.
Rain chances will decrease over the next 24 hours, but rain and thunderstorms remain in the forecast through Sunday evening. By Monday, rain is no longer the story, but heat and humidity will be. Highs will climb into the low to mid-90s much of the upcoming week with heat indices between 100-105°.
Ten to 12 inches of rain has been reported in areas west of Nashville. The National Weather Service has called it a "catastrophic flooding situation."
A Flash Flood Warning remains in effect for Dickson, Hickman, Houston and Humphreys County until 5 p.m.
A Flash Flood Watch is still in place for Bedford, Cheatham, Dickson, Giles, Hickman, Houston, Humphreys, Lawrence, Lewis, Marshall, Maury, Montgomery, Perry, Stewart, Wayne, Williamson counties until midnight.
Areas west of Nashville have seen the heaviest rain over the last few days. It has left the ground saturated in some spots. Additional rainfall Saturday morning has caused flooding in these areas.
Two additional waves of rain are expected to come through on Saturday. The first one is expected in the early morning hours and will bring heavy rain to the areas in the Flash Flood Watch.
Flash Flood Warnings have been issued Saturday morning for Dickson, Hickman, Humphreys, Stewart and Houston Counties until 12:45 p.m.
Flash Flood Emergencies have also been issued for portions of Dickson, Hickman, Humphreys and Houston Counties. The National Weather Service reports there have been numerous calls for water rescues and road closures amid an "incredibly dangerous flooding situation" in those counties.
Most flood deaths occur in vehicles so avoid flooded roads.
