N.J. weather: Flash flood warning issued for parts of North Jersey as heavy rain continues - NJ.com

Heavy bands of rain from the remnants of Hurricane Henri that are moving through North Jersey could cause more flash flooding Sunday in Union, Essex, Passaic, Hudson and Bergen counties, the National Weather Service said.

A flash flood warning is in effect until 5:45 p.m. for the northeast corner of New Jersey, covering a stretch of the state from Westfield and Elizabeth in the south to Ringwood and Ramsey in the north. The area also includes most of New York City and its northern suburbs.

Residents should move to higher ground immediately if water levels start to rise and avoid driving or walking through flood water, the weather service said.

The flash flood warning is the latest in a series of watches and warnings in the aftermath of Hurricane Henri, which was downgraded to a tropical storm as it passed over New York and into New England.

Though the storm did not hit New Jersey directly, bands of rain lingered over Middlesex County and other areas, triggering flash floods Saturday night and Sunday.

“This storm will continue to bring heavy rain to the state today, with the potential for flash flooding. Stay home and stay safe,” Gov. Phil Murphy tweeted Sunday afternoon.

The rain is expected to linger into Monday, the National Weather Service said.
