GOLDSBORO — The Wayne County Board of Education unanimously approved a payment to eliminate the remaining debt incurred after overspending its state budget in 2019-20.
Wayne County Public Schools will pay the remaining $871,000 along with any interest charges owed to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
Two years ago, the district overspent the state budget by $2.2 million. DPI also charged a 1% monthly interest charge for any unpaid funds left over.
In March of 2021, the board approved a $1.3 million payment to DPI.
WCPS interim superintendent Dr. David Lewis and the finance department closely monitored budgets throughout the spring. They also sought financial consultation with Aaron Beaulieu, president of School Operation Specialists, LLC, last summer after the financial issues arose.
