WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Flash Season 7, Episode 13, "Masquerade," which aired Tuesday on The CW.
Team Flash might be in a state of transition as co-founding member Cisco Ramon and his longtime girlfriend Kamilla Hwang depart from Central City, but resident tech expert Chester P. Runk has already proven himself as up to the task of giving the Scarlet Speedster the technical know-how he needs to save the day. And as the team faces its first major challenge without Cisco, a friendly, familiar face is poised to stay with the Arrowverse ensemble in the interim: Sue Dearbon.
Manipulated by a malevolent entity generated from Psycho Pirate's mask, Chester believes the team needs to steal the mask from the Central City Museum in order to prevent Barry Allen from suffering permanent brain damage. With the museum sporting a high-tech security system, Chester decides to request Sue use her expertise as a master cat burglar to return to Central City and help stage the heist. Sue is able to live up to her reputation, and, after the entity is revealed and defeated by the team, she decides to remain in Central City for the foreseeable future.
After being teased in The Flash Season 5 as a missing person investigated by Ralph Dibney, Sue made her full debut in Season 6, apparently working with the criminal syndicate Black Hole. Sue eventually confessed that she was coerced into working for Black Hole, as the organization threatened her parents, while also revealing she trained all her life around the world to become an expert in infiltration and burglary that put her on the level of a master spy. Forming a close relationship with Ralph, the two left Central City after defeating Mirror Monarch to dismantle other organizations like Black Hole around the globe.
While Sue is welcomed back into Team Flash with open arms, her return does underscore the continued glaring absence of the Elongated Man, explained away as being able to fend for himself in parts unknown for the interim. When Ralph was last seen, he endured horrific burns from an explosion while helping defeat Mirror Monarch. Placed in a special suit of armor and helmet to recover, with the helmet conveniently obscuring his face, Ralph left with Sue to recuperate and hopefully regain his face. This development was the result of a behind-the-scenes incident, with actor Hartley Sawyer fired from the production after offensive tweets resurfaced during the production hiatus between Seasons 6 and 7.
With Sue her to stay for the immediate future, Team Flash now has a member that can run point on security systems and infiltrate the most tightly guarded facilities in the Arrowverse. And with the overzealous Kristen Kramer -- a special investigator with a barely concealed vendetta against metahumans -- now the Captain of the Central City Police Department, these skills may come in handy if Team Flash continues to find itself on the wrong of the law under Kramer's purview. Sue's unique set of skills are poised to come in handy soon, just don't expect the Elongated Man to make his return any time soon, at least not with Ralph's original face.
The Flash stars Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Jesse L. Martin, Danielle Panabaker, Carlos Valdes and Tom Cavanagh. New episodes air Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
