Michael Keaton’s ‘Batman Returns’ Features The Flash Easter Egg - Heroic Hollywood

The DC multiverse just got more interesting!

A resurfaced Easter egg from Michael Keaton’s Batman Returns seemingly sees The Flash at a dinner party.

Headlines were made late June when it was announced that Michael Keaton was in talks to return as Batman for Ezra Miller’s upcoming The Flash film. Keaton last played the character in 1992’s Batman Return. We’ve known for quite sometime that the solo The Flash movie would feature time travel and the multiverse but with Keaton on board, we’re about to get a brand new but familiar take on the character.  Fans, saddled with excitement, decided to revisit Keaton’s two Batman films. In doing so, they discovered an old Easter egg from Batman Returns which sees someone dressed as The Flash crossing paths with Keaton’s Bruce Wayne!

In Batman Returns, Michael Keaton’s Bruce Wayne is at a dinner party where someone dressed as the Jay Garrick version of The Flash briefly shows up! The Garrick version of the character doesn’t wear the traditional The Flash suit and instead rocks a Hermes helmet. If you look at the video below, which is from 2018, you’ll see the fun Easter egg.

Of course, we know it isn’t the Barry Allen version of The Flash that Michael Keaton is crossing paths with but it’s still interesting nonetheless. One can only imagine what treasure troves of secrets lie in the early superhero films of the ’70s and ’80s, which have been left unexamined since the modern age of superheroes took over. At the time, the Batman Returns Easter egg must have been a fun nod towards the character, with not many people in the audience understanding its relevance. Even then, this could literally just be a random Gotham citizen dressed in the Jay Garrick costume considering it is, well, a costume party where such dress-ups are encouraged! Regardless if it’s The Flash himself, or just someone dressed like him, the Easter egg seems to be a literal manifestation of what the future had in store for Keaton’s Batman.

Are you excited to see Michael Keaton’s Batman appear in The Flash film? Will you be revisiting Batman Returns this weekend? Comment below and let us know!

Directed by Andy Muschietti from a script written by Birds of Prey scribe Christina Hodson, The Flash will be inspired by the Flashpoint comic storyline which followed The Flash as he navigated an altered DC Universe. Written by Geoff Johns and penciled by Andy Kuber, Flashpoint radically altered the status of the DC Comics universe and led to the launch of the New 52 titles. It is currently unknown how much inspiration the upcoming Ezra Miller film will take from the comic.

The Flash is set to hit theaters on June 3rd, 2022. Stay tuned for all the latest news on The Flash and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more exclusive video content.
