How to apply for the Louisiana's $250 'hazard pay' for front-line coronavirus workers - Daily Advertiser

Front-line workers of the coronavirus pandemic in Louisiana can start applying this week for $250 of hazard pay.

The rebate, approved by the Legislature, is for essential employees who worked during Louisiana's stay-at-home period. The money was carved out from Louisiana's CARES Act money.

The payment is a way to recognize the “hazard” front-line workers faced, said Louisiana Department of Revenue Secretary Kimberly Robinson.

“It’s the essential workers who made sure we had the services that we all needed during the pandemic,” she said. “These people really put their health and safety on the line when we really didn’t know anything else about the coronavirus.”

Who qualifies for hazard pay in Louisiana?

Front-line workers include health care workers, such as nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacy staff and housekeeping personnel at hospitals and health care facilities. It extends to emergency medical services personnel, law enforcement personnel, grocery store workers, mortuary service providers and veterinary service staff.

Employees must have provided in-person services outside of their home from March 22 to May 14 for at least 200 hours, or about five, 40-hour weeks. Those applying for the rebate must have an adjusted gross income of $50,000 or less.

When can a front-line worker apply?

The applications open Wednesday and will remain open through Oct. 31. The available money is first come, first served. State lawmakers have set aside $50 million for front-line workers, which would equal 200,000 people.

Where can you to apply?

Those who qualify can submit an electronic or paper application. It can be found at frontlineworkers.la.gov. The application will go live Wednesday.

Applicants must certify they worked the 200 hours. The Department of Revenue and Louisiana Workforce Commission will verify employment.

Front-line workers will indicate whether they want to receive their rebate via direct deposit or a mailed check. An official estimated timeline for returned rebates will be announced later this week, Robinson said.
