Hartley Sawyer lost his role as Ralph Dibny on The Flash after racist and sexist tweets that posted prior to his hiring resurfaced. While an unfortunate situation all around, Sawyer's firing has left many wondering whether The CW series will elect to recast Ralph or if it will decide to replace him with an entirely new character.
If the series really wants to keep Ralph around, the best option might be to use the character's shapeshifting abilities. Storywise, Dibny is a detective and could spend the time between Season 6 and 7 working a case that would need him to "kill Ralph Dibny" in order to solve it. From that point on, the character would be unable to go back to his Ralph figure.
If that plan was to fail, though, there is always the face-changing technology introduced by H.R. Wells all the way back in Season 3 which allowed him to roam around Central City with the face of Harrison Wells. Alternatively, due to Season 6 being cut short, Season 7 could have Ralph reform his shape in order to work for the seasons' big bad, Eva, as a way to get information to take her down.
Doctor Who when William Hartnell became too old to play the titular character. With a need to keep the show alive but change the actor, the producers introduced the concept of regeneration as a way to change the actor without heavily affecting the show. This is also been done in the James Bond series, in which it's theorized that the Bond name is simply passed down from agent to agent.
Changing the actor while keeping the character is a huge trope in sci-fi that started with
Since it may be hard to explain why Ralph can no longer form back into his Sawyer body, the show may elect to bring in a new character. Batwoman has decided to have an entirely new character replace lead actress Ruby Rose rather than recast her because the powers that be feel like they don't want to tarnish the work they've already put in. This opportunity could allow The CW to whip up an original character to take on the Elongated Man mantle, something it began dabbling with in the last season of The Flash.
However, creating a new Elongated Man character might not be as easy as it sounds. While yes, the Ralph Dibny story was engaging and gave him a redemption arc, replacing his character might not give the same effect as before. Unless the writers of The Flash have a good idea for an Elongated Man character after Dibny leaves, then there is no reason to have the character remain at all.
The Arrowverse has had many characters come in and out of shows without mentioning them again. If The Flash's creative team can come up with a workaround, it could do this to Elongated Man without hurting the show's bottom line. This scenario would also lay the groundwork to give characters like Allegra and Chester P. Runk more spotlight on the show.
Returning to The CW for its seventh season in 2021, The Flash stars Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Carlos Valdes, Danielle Panabaker, Tom Cavanagh, Jesse L. Martin and Danielle Nicolet.
