Justice League: Flash's Backstory in the Snyder Cut Will Help Flashpoint - Screen Rant

The upcoming Justice League Snyder Cut will provide an excellent kickstart for The Flash movie. Among DCEU films, The Flash has survived considerable uncertainty, going through numerous directors, shifting release dates, and doubts about Ezra Miller returning as the Scarlet Speedster. Following Andy Muschietti boarding as director in 2019, the project finally seemed to be gaining momentum, with Muschietti also confirming that the movie will tell its own version of the Flashpoint story arc.

In Flashpoint, Barry Allen uses his ability to time-travel to go back into the past and prevent the murder of his mother Nora Allen by the Reverse-Flash. Unfortunately, this has devastating consequences for the entire world and completely rewrites history. In addition to its role in starting DC's New 52 continuity, Flashpoint was also adapted into the animated movie Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox.

The Snyder Cut's announcement has added, if not clarity, than at least a great deal of possibility towards what the DCEU's future may look like, with news of Henry Cavill being in talks to portray Superman again emerging not long after. What connection the Snyder Cut will share with other DCEU movies, particularly upcoming ones, has been perhaps the biggest question over DC's cinematic future in the time since news broke of its forthcoming debut on HBO Max in 2021. Although there's still a lot up in the air about The Flash and the rest of the DCEU, there's good reason to think that not only would a Flashpoint-based story work for it, but that it may have even already been set in motion by the Snyder Cut.

The Flash's Backstory Was Cut From Justice League

Barry Allen and Iris West in the Snyder Cut

Between the theatrical cut's two hour runtime and how conservatively it used Zack Snyder's footage, Justice League lost a tremendous amount of character development from the original plan. While it isn't fully known how much of Barry Allen's backstory was worked into the movie in the first go-around, the Snyder Cut definitely includes it to some extent. One major aspect of this can be seen in the inclusion of Iris West, completely absent from the theatrical cut and played by Kiersey Clemons in the Snyder Cut.

Iris was previously glimpsed in a leaked scene with unfinished visual effects showing Barry using his super-speed to rescue her from a car accident, with Snyder also releasing a few images of Clemons' West on social media, including one of her and Barry with the caption "Cute couple". The theatrical version also featured Barry's father Henry Allen, played by Billy Crudup, in prison, and considering how much longer the Snyder Cut is, it's entirely possible that it may have gone into more detail on the death of Nora Allen and Henry being wrongly imprisoned for it. However, where the Snyder Cut's relationship with The Flash really takes shape in Barry's role in the former's ending.

The Flash Learned To Time Travel At The End Of The Snyder Cut

Something that's become clear by now is that the Snyder Cut provided the foundation for multiple solo movies to be spun-off from its story. Aquaman's send-off in the film was meant as a direct lead-in to Arthur Curry's solo movie, while Snyder's version of Lex Luthor's meeting with Deathstroke at the end of the film was meant to set up Ben Affleck's Batman solo movie. Additionally, the curtain has been pulled back enough on the Snyder Cut to reveal that Barry's time-travel powers are a major element of the third act.

In the Snyder Cut, the climactic battle sees League being defeated by Steppenwolf. However, Barry finally learns to time-travel and goes back into the past far enough for the heroes to have a second shot at victory. As it turns out, this one plot point of the final battle in the Snyder Cut has already provided the building blocks for a Flashpoint movie in the DCEU.

The Snyder Cut Could Be A Perfect Flashpoint Movie Setup

One enticing aspect of adapting Flashpoint to film is that Barry Allen's origin is an essential component of it. With the crux of the story being Barry undoing his mother's murder at the hands of the Reverse-Flash, Flashpoint covers a huge amount of ground on Barry's beginnings, making it a very accessible story to audiences not well-versed in the lore of The Flash. Flashpoint also includes the concept of the Speed Force (which itself opens the door to the "Speedster Multiverse", as Miller has described it) as an integral element, and this is where Barry developing his time-travel powers in the Snyder Cut starts to come into play.

Specifically, with the movie fully establishing Barry as capable of time-travel, the Snyder Cut has already done a lot of the heavy lifting for Flashpoint. In particular, it completely eliminates any need for the movie to provide a set-up for Barry becoming a time-traveler, and allows it to just dive right into Barry's attempt to save Nora and the apocalyptic fallout that results from it. In all, well in advance of its HBO Max debut next year, the Snyder Cut has already done a great deal to set the table for a Flashpoint movie. In fact, after time-traveling to save the day in the 3rd act, a simple line from Barry to his dad at the end of the movie, like "I think I found a way to bring back mom" would certainly thrill anyone knowing a Flashpoint inspired Flash solo movie is on the way.

Will The Flash Movie Even Be Snyder Cut Canon?

Ezra Miller as The Flash in Justice League

One of the major questions to emerge in the wake of the Snyder Cut's announcement is the question of its canonicity with past and future DCEU movies. The Flash has certainly picked up considerable steam from the development hell it had previously been in once Andy Muschietti boarded as director. However, reports have emerged of Clemons' Iris West isn't yet locked in, while Ezra Miller himself has also faced his own recent assault controversy. With all of this in addition to the sheer number of directors to come and go from The Flash, much less is certain about it than other upcoming DC movies, even with Muschietti directing and the Snyder Cut's announcement.

With all of that being said, one thing that cannot be overstated is how much of a Get Out Of Jail Free card Ezra Miller's Crisis On Infinite Earths cameo has given the DCEU in terms of continuity, along with opening the aforementioned concept of the Multiverse in an undeniable way. Furthermore, the available details about the Snyder Cut demonstrate that The Flash sharing the same continuity with it would be the best move it could make. Given how much it will have already established about Barry's powers and backstory, the Snyder Cut essentially gives The Flash free reign to tell its own Flashpoint-based story while being unburdened by the mandate of getting the audience up to speed on Barry's background and the world he lives in.

While many have questioned the wisdom of using Flashpoint as the basis for the first big-screen Flash movie, its use of time-travel makes it incredibly malleable in the role in can play in a larger shared continuity. Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox previously used it as the starting point for the DC Animated Movie Universe, and the centrality of Barry's origin to Flashpoint makes it a story that could easily branch off from the ending of the Snyder Cut. Not only that, but with everything that is definitively known about the movie, Zack Snyder's Justice League has already provided The Flash with everything it needs for an adaptation of Flashpoint.
