How The Flash season 7 will be changed by Hartley Sawyer's firing - digitalspy.com

Even someone as fast as The Flash might struggle to keep up with everything going on in the Arrowverse right now. After The CW was forced to temporarily halt production earlier this year, Ruby Rose left Batwoman for reasons not yet made clear, and now her character Kate Kane is being replaced by someone new in season two.

Things started to look up though when it was announced that filming may soon resume on The Flash and other Arrowverse shows. More good news came when Supergirl's Chyler Leigh finally felt ready to discuss her sexuality in public, but a new 'crisis' then hit the Arrowverse when The Flash fired principal cast member Hartley Sawyer.

The Ralph Dibny actor was let go after racist and misogynistic tweets he wrote in 2012 and 2014 resurfaced. Sawyer has apologised since, explaining on Instagram that "This was not acceptable behaviour."

Following his firing, The Flash showrunner Eric Wallace released a statement which confirmed that Sawyer will not return for season seven:

"Concerning his social media tweets, they broke my heart and made me mad as hell. And they're indicative of the larger problem in our country."

"I, too, am committed to bringing permanent change to the work environment on The Flash. Yes, this is a family show. But, it's for all families. That includes Black and Brown ones.'

The Flash star Grant Gustin added in a further statement that he too was "shocked, saddened and angry" to discover what Sawyer had said.

While it's reassuring to hear that Wallace and his team will make an effort to prioritise Black talent more moving forward, what remains unclear is how this new development will impact The Flash season seven.

Even before this controversy hit the show, season six ended with a finale that was never supposed to be a finale at all. When production shut down early due to the coronavirus pandemic, The Flash team was forced to speed things up and try their best to bring some finality to the nineteenth episode of season six.

The result wasn't perfect by any means, leaving more up in the air than fans would usually expect. Not only is Iris now missing, but this marks the first time a season of The Flash ends with the villain winning. Still, this makeshift finale did what it could to bring some resolution while setting up what's to come.

Frustratingly though, much of this is pinned on Hartley Sawyer's character, Ralph Dibny, and his relationship with Sue Dearborn.

At the end of season six, Eva takes over as head of McCulloch Technologies, and frames Sue for her husband's murder.

While it's almost certain that actress Natalie Dreyfuss will return as Sue, her entire involvement with the show thus far has been intrinsically linked to Ralph. In the comics, the pair are a beloved couple, and although they hadn't hooked up yet on screen, The Flash season six finale strongly hinted that romance was on the cards.

Showrunner Eric Wallace recently said as much to Comicbook.com, describing Sue and Ralph's future as one where they should be "coming together and falling in love."

Clearly, that's not happening anymore, but whatever does happen, the trajectory of The Flash will need to be revised moving forward. Season seven isn't due to start until January 2021 thanks to those aforementioned delays in production, so this will provide the writers with plenty of time to rework their vision for the show.

Still, it's a shame that all of the time and effort invested in Ralph's character has now come to nothing... unless, of course, Diby's hero stays on the show, after all. Instead of writing Ralph out completely, The Flash could just recast him instead.

In the Arrowverse, there are multiple ways to handle this which make sense within the context of the story, including magic and even alternate versions of people from other realities. On top of all that, Sawyer would be even easier to replace than most because his character is an actual shapeshifter.

With that in mind, it wouldn't take much to come up with a good reason why the Elongated Man is stuck in a new form which doesn't resemble Sawyer. By doing this, The Flash can then continue developing Ralph's storyline with Sue while also maintaining his connection to the rest of Team Flash. After all, Sawyer's character has become increasingly important to this show over the years and it would be a shame to discard that history completely.

Writing Ralph off would add even more uncertainty to the show's future, and replacing him with a new teammate who possesses the same abilities would be even stranger (although that hasn't stopped Batwoman from doing something similar).

Whatever happens, the most important thing is that Sawyer's behaviour was addressed immediately, and this hints at a brighter future for the Arrowverse at large.

The Flash airs on Tuesdays at 8/7c on The CW in the US. Sky One and NOW TV air the show in the UK.
