WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for "Success Is Assured," the Season 6 finale The Flash, which aired Tuesday on The CW.
Season 6 of The Flash was supposed to run for 22 episodes. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, production of the series was shut down, and Episode 19, "Success Is Assured," served as the impromptu finale for this season. Generally, a season finale of The Flash sees the Scarlet Speedster and his friends face the year's respective main antagonist in a final battle. The levels of action differ from year to year, but the concluding episode of any given season usually delivers plenty of spectacle. Unfortunately, fans will have to wait to see what the original ending of Season 6 was supposed to be at the start of next year.
However, a fortunate coincidence has led Season 6 to end with just as much spectacle as we would expect from The Flash's biggest episodes. In fact, "Success Is Assured" delivers one of the series' best action sequences -- and the and most surprising part is, there is no super-speed involved.
In the Season 6 finale, Team Flash ends up forming an alliance with an unexpected villain: Joseph Carver, CEO of McCulloch Technologies. While Carver and his organization Black Hole have been a big threat in the back half of the season, he asks Barry Allen and his friends for some help when his wife, Eva McCulloch, aka the new Mirror Master, escapes from the Mirroverse and threatens his life.
As the leader of Black Hole, Carver had multiple metahumans as his enforcers such as the new Captain Light, Sunshine and Ultraviolet -- all villains that have gone up against Team Flash in recent episodes. However, after escaping from her prison, Mirror Master found all three of Carver's Black Hole agents and turned them against him. With three super-powered killers after him, as well as his vengeful wife, Carver has no choice but to seek help from the Scarlet Speedster and his super-friends.
The headquarters of McCulloch Technologies is chosen as the place to best protect Carver, given that his special panic room, as well as the building's defenses, make it the best place for him to stay out of his wife's reach. Since Barry only has a fraction of his speed powers left, he remains at Carver's side in the panic room, and it's up to the rest of Team Flash to guard the building: Ralph Dibny, Nash Wells and Allegra Garcia.
Soon, Sunshine, Doctor Light and Ultraviolet all show up in unison to take on Ralph, Nash and Allegra. The superheroes have previously dealt with one of these enemies at a time, but never together. What follows is an extended action scene that involves all six characters, as well as Sue Dearbon when she unexpectedly joins the side of the good guys. Sure, there are superpowers involved on both sides, but it's nothing compared to a final race between Flash and his speedster enemies.
Instead, the action sequence between Team Flash and Black Hole shows the characters' skills at hand-to-hand combat, combined with the added thrill of superpowers. There is more of an opportunity for the characters to cut loose her, and the choreography on display makes this easily a standout in Season 6 -- and the series as a whole. There are plenty of fun little team-ups, and the camera work plays around with the vast cast of characters involved. Over the years, there have been plenty of exciting fight scenes on The Flash, but now the series has delivered one of its best ones ever -- and Barry Allen wasn't even in the fray.
Airing Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, The Flash stars Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Carlos Valdes, Danielle Panabaker, Tom Cavanagh, Jesse L. Martin, Danielle Nicolet and Hartley Sawyer.
