Grant Gustin has raced through nearly a decade as the titular hero on The Flash - but two other members of the Arrowverse also auditioned for the role of Barry Allen. Created by Robert Kanigher and Carmine Infantino, Barry took up the superhero mantle previously held by Jay Garrick in the 1940s. Despite being the second iteration of the character, he became the most well-known and enduring version of the Scarlet Speedster. As such, he has been brought to life countless times in both animation and live-action.
Gustin debuted as Barry Allen in Arrow season 2, episode 8, "The Scientist" when he arrived to assist Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) in solving a metahuman-related crime. The two-episode arc served as a backdoor pilot for a solo Flash-centric spin-off. As well as unveiling Barry's tragic backstory, the guest-appearance ended with the accident that would give him superpowers of his own. The Flash rapidly became one of The CW's most successful shows of all-time - even helping to spawn its own spin-offs, including Legends of Tomorrow.
Across the seasons, The Flash has developed quite the ensemble around Barry Allen. Among others, the show has starred Candice Patton as Iris West-Allen, Carlos Valdes as Cisco Ramon, Danielle Panabaker as Caitlin Snow, and Tom Cavanagh as various iterations of Harrison Wells. The Flash season 7 develops and expands the team even further as they continue their trend of defeating villains and saving the world. However, things could've looked very different at the head of Team Flash. Here are two familiar Arrowverse faces that were in the running alongside Gustin:
Andy Mientus
Andy Mientus originally auditioned for the role of Barry Allen. In an interview with Collider, he admitted that he didn't get too far in the process. As such, Mientus doesn't lament the role that got away. "I got great feedback that said, 'He's not quite the right fit for Barry, but we really like him. He's really interesting. Maybe there's something down the pike.'" That would actually translate to taking on the role of Hartley Rathaway (aka Pied Piper). He debuted as the sometimes villain/sometimes ally in The Flash season 1, before reappearing in season 2 and playing a new, post-Crisis version in The Flash season 6. Mientus revealed that he wouldn't have had it any other way, feeling an immediate kinship with the first openly gay supervillain and his journey into moments of heroism. "When I read it, I saw that it was maybe a good fit for me, and I just really liked it. It was a character that I wanted to see and knew I would enjoy, as a viewer, so it was then somebody that I wanted to embody. I'm really glad it worked out." Still, it's interesting to imagine how different Barry Allen may have been in Mientus' hands.
Jeremy Jordan
The same could be said for Jeremy Jordan. The actor is best known within the Arrowverse as Winn Schott on Supergirl. Jordan debuted as the character in the pilot episode and remained for multiple seasons after the show jumped to The CW. For a time, it appeared as though he would follow his comic book counterpart into villainy. However, Supergirl subverted expectations by having the character become a hero in his own right. However, Jordan almost started his superhero career early with an audition for Barry Allen. Sharing many traits with Gustin, it's easy to envision that he proved solid competition. However, given that Jordan ultimately stepped away from playing Winn full-time to focus on family and theater work, it's probably best for him that he didn't land the role. After all, playing the titular lead on such a show as The Flash would have meant putting those dreams on hold - or led to a situation similar to the one faced by Ruby Rose when she opted to quit starring as Kate Kane on Batwoman.
According to EW, Gustin was actually the first person that casting director David Rapaport saw for the role. He continued the search mostly at the behest of the network executives, before ultimately selling them on Gustin following a chemistry test with Emily Bett Rickard's Felicity Smoak. Rapaport knew Gustin to be an "affable, dorky, charming, fun dude". He subsequently believed that lent itself to both being a relatable everyman and playing the goofier side of having superpowers thrust upon you. Equally, Amell knew immediately that Gustin was a perfect choice. After so many seasons of The Flash, and with even more to come, it's almost impossible to disagree with that belief and even harder still to envision anybody but Gustin as Barry Allen.
