10 Things Flash Fans Should Know About The Black Flash | CBR - CBR - Comic Book Resources

The Grim Reaper, Hades, Anubis; 'Death' has been called by many things and has been personified in many forms throughout cultures and time. Comic book universes are no different from having their own mythologies that chronicle the fictional worlds they created. In a world, of varying levels of supernatural beings, there is no simple way to explain a concept like death. One of the more fantastical characters is the Flash. He is a founding member of the Justice League and his speed and the ability to travel through time has been the catalyst for many crossover and crisis-level events.

It stands to reason that a special form of death would be created for this unique hero and his fellow Speedsters. Here are the 10 things Flash Fans should know about the Grim Reaper of the fastest men and women alive.

10 Personification Of Death

Several characters within the DC Universe are considered to be 'Death' incarnate including Nekron, Death of the Endless, and the Black Racer. All of these characters have their own backstories and jurisdictions within the larger universe. The Black Flash is one of these beings of 'Death'.

He is considered to be the personification of death for those who are connected to the Speed Force including the Flash, Max Mercury, Jessie Quick, and more. His presence is meant to signal the impending death of a Speedster with the power to even return people to the Speed Force itself.

9 Death To A Speedster

Though death comes to all in time, what happens when one is able to pause and even travel through time? That is where the Black Flash comes in. Where death may be the final end for most, Speedsters have the unnatural ability to escape and even cheat it as seen in storylines like "Flashpoint" where Barry Allen went back in time to save his mother's life.

So naturally, the universe created the Black Flash, a being of death that can access the Speed Force itself and takedown Speedsters when their time comes.

8 First Appearance

The Black Flash made his debut in June of 1998 in The Flash #138 on the last panel of a three-part storyline called "The Human Race". The storyline followed a race between Wally West's Flash and Krakkl, an electric alien. The race was set up by the Cosmic Gamblers who threatened to destroy the world of the loser.

At the end of the story, both the Flash and Krakkl outdo the Cosmic Gamblers and save both their worlds. It is then revealed that the Flash (Wally West) is retelling this story to a class of young students whom he takes a picture with before running off. In the final panel, a shadow is revealed in the photo, introducing the Black Flash.

7 Death Vs Time

Following the events of "The Human Race," the Black Flash comes after Wally West in a self-titled storyline. But fellow speedsters, Max Mercury and Jessie Quick are able to save Wally before he is taken by 'death'. Unfortunately, the Black Flash ends up killing Wally's girlfriend, Linda Park, absorbing her into the Speed Force itself. After a tragic funeral, the Black Flash returns to finish what he started. With help from his friends, Wally is able to evade the dark speedster for a while but ultimately discovers that there is no escaping death.

So Wally runs all the way to the end of time where death is meaningless. Once there, the Black Flash loses his power and disintegrates into nothing. Wally than risks his life again by running back into the Speed Force to save Linda.

6 Killer Or A Silent Observer?

Though death in comics isn't very permanent, the Black Flash has had several victims in his 22-year comic book history. As was mentioned above, while going after Wally West, the Black Flash instead killed Linda Park absorbing her into the Speed Force. Other notable victims include speedsters Johnny Quick and Barry Allen.

In addition, there are plenty of times where the Black Flash doesn't kill the Speedster himself but rather appears at the end of their life. This has been shown at the death of Bart Allen at the hands of the Rouges in "The Flash: The Fastest Man Alive" #13. Some argue whether the Black Flash even kills at all and says that his appearance is merely an omen of impending death.

5 Barry Becomes The Black Flash

Barry Allen is considered to be the main Flash these days with his show on the CW and portrayal in the DC movies. It's shocking to then find out that he was dead for nearly 25 years after the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths. But after the Flash's return in Final Crisis, Geoff Johns came out with the now famous storyline Flash Rebirth, which sees Barry turn into the Black Flash. After trying to stay contained by the Justice League, Barry runs into the Speed Force to ensure that he doesn't hurt anyone.

While in the Speed Force, Barry discovers Max Mercury and Johnny Quick, the latter of which he accidentally kills when they touch due to his new Black Flash powers. At that moment Eobard Thawne shows up to reveal that all of this was his doing going back to the events of Infinite Crisis. He set up a chain reaction that shifted Barry's energy to the Negative Speed Force causing him to kill Speedsters with a single touch.

4 The Self Proclaimed Black Flash

Another Geoff Johns storyline called Blackest Night saw many of the deceased DC characters revived by Nekron, another form of 'Death', to join the Black Lantern Corps.

One of the resurrected was pre-crisis, Eobard Thawne. Now wearing the black power ring and new black suit, Professor Zoom declared himself the new "Black Flash". And in classic villain fashion, he ran off to kill the Flash, Barry Allen.

3 The Black Racer

Another entity of 'Death' in the DC Universe is the Black Racer who is often confused by fans to be the same as the Black Flash. In truth, just like the Black Flash is death for the Speedsters; the Black Racer is death for the New Gods who were created by Jack Kirby.

The Black Racer uses two cosmic powered skis as his means of transport and collects New Gods at their moment of death-bringing them to Hadis, the underworld of Fourth World.

2 Barry Becomes The Black Racer

During the penultimate story arc of DC's New 52, The Darkseid War, the Justice League is caught in the midst of a war raging between Darkseid and the Anti-Monitor. It's at this point that Darkseid summons the Black Racer.

But instead, the Anti-Monitor merged the Black Racer with Barry Allen using the Anti-Life Equation. The Anit-Monitor than uses this amalgam character to kill Darkseid.

1 CW's The Flash

The Black Flash has been one of the few villains to have crossed between CW shows. His first appearance was is in The Flash season two finale, where the Time Wraiths dragged Hunter Zolomon into the Speed Force, transforming him into the Black Flash.

In Legends of Tomorrow season 2, the Black Flash is after Thawne leading him to recruit past villains, Damien Darhk and Malcolm Merlyn, to form the Legion of Doom.
