WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for The Flash Season 6 on The CW.
One of the most prominent, enduring romances in the entire Arrowverse is between Barry Allen and his wife Iris West. The fan-favorite couple took their friendship to the next level in Season 2 and were married in Season 4. However, the second half of Season 6, following the cataclysmic "Crisis on Infinite Earths" event, has seen the couple separated by a new villain: Eva McCulloch, the new Mirror Master. Eva secretly trapped Iris in a pocket dimension within one of her mirrors while Barry's wife was replaced by an identical doppelgänger, with the Scarlet Speedster unaware of the change for weeks.
Employing a whole cadre of mirror duplicates, Eva plotted to emerge from the Mirrorverse and reunite with Joseph Carver, the head of McCulloch Technologies who has quietly been financing supervillains throughout Central City since the "Crisis." However, while Eva's love for Carver is not quite as ideal as she dreams, Barry and Iris' love for one another is so strong that it has saved Barry's life once again.
The "Crisis" and subsequent restoration of the DCTV Multiverse had the unforeseen consequence of gravely wounding the Speed Force that gave Barry his powers. Without it, Barry's super-speed has steadily diminished as he has burnt through his speed reserves to continue to protect Central City as the Flash. Mirror Iris has made this growing weakness known to Eva, who accelerated her own plans accordingly to take advantage of the increasingly weakened Scarlet Speedster. Barry was also brought to an emotional low after Mirror Iris kicked him out of their apartment following a marital spat, with the hero still unaware of the doppelgänger's true identity.
As a wounded and weak Barry finds himself at Mirror Iris' mercy after he learns the truth, the real Iris taunts Eva from the Mirrorverse, causing the villain to lash out and weaken her mirror duplicate menacing The Flash. Barry reminds the Mirror Iris that there is a significant portion of his wife and her love for him within her, urging her to live for herself instead of being a pawn for Eva's machinations. This appeal succeeds, with Mirror Iris sparing Barry before Eva destroys the disobedient duplicate and emerges from the Mirrorverse herself. Perhaps inspired by Barry and Iris' love for one another, even visible through the doppelgänger, Eva surprisingly spares Barry's life while proceeding with her own plot.
Love has always kept Barry Allen grounded while pushing him to find new depths to his powers and speed, whenever he needs it the most. It was Barry's love for Iris that led him to developing the speed necessary to defeat Savitar in Season 3 while learning that Iris was in danger brought him back to his senses after he was trapped within the Speed Force for months at the start of Season 4. And now, with Season 6, love has saved Barry Allen's life both from the Mirrorverse duplicate of Iris and from the new Mirror Master herself.
While Iris currently remains trapped within the Mirrorverse and Barry's speed continues to fail him, the one thing that hasn't diminished and keeps the two connected is there love for one another. It's only a matter of time before Iris stages her own escape and reunites with Barry, likely giving the Flash the inspiration he needs to develop his own Speed Force and turn the tables on his growing enemies once and for all.
Airing Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, The Flash stars Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Carlos Valdes, Danielle Panabaker, Tom Cavanagh, Jesse L. Martin, Danielle Nicolet and Hartley Sawyer.
