WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for "Liberation," the latest episode of The Flash, which aired Tuesday on The CW.
Season 6 of The Flash has been different than the ones that came before. Prior seasons focused on one big bad spread throughout 22 episodes, such as Reverse-Flash, Zoom, and the Thinker. However, Season 6 was split into two, with the first half of the season introducing Ramsey Rosso, aka Bloodwork, as the series' latest villain. But just before the events of "Crisis on Infinite Earths," Bloodwork was defeated. When The Flash returned for the second half of its season, it started focusing on a new threat: Eva McCulloch, the new Mirror Master. For the past few months, Team Flash has been dealing with both Black Hole and Eva, two sides of the same coin.
However, the series' latest episode, "Liberation," features a surprise return from Bloodwork, and it shows that the villain isn't done being a threat this season. And as it turns out, his return is one of the best things for the show.
In "Liberation," Eva McCulloch sent out her mirror doubles to collect a sample of Ramsey's blood in order for her to finally open a portal that will allow her to escape the mirror dimension. When the doubles face Ramsey inside the A.R.G.U.S. facility where he is imprisoned, they offer him a deal: a sample of his blood for his freedom. While Ramsey accepts the deal, he shows that he's got his very own plan in the works by refusing to escape. He gives the mirror version of Iris his blood, but he chooses to stay in his cell, claiming that he is planning a long game.
Instantly, fans are left to wonder what the villain has planned next, and are eager to see his return. The second half of Season 6 has been lackluster compared to the first. In fact, before the events of "Crisis on Infinite Earths," Ramsey proved to be a formidable villain, one who was both frightening and a welcome departure from the series' usual main threats. He set a promising precedent for the season, but unfortunately, the new Mirror Master hasn't been able to live up to that.
For the most part, Eva McCulloch has been dead set on leaving the mirror dimension, while her husband and his Black Hole organization have been causing trouble for Team Flash. These two threads are connected, but they prove to be far less of an engaging challenge than Bloodwork, who had his own army of zombie-like drones and the ability to corrupt the Flash. It's unclear when Ramsey will return next, but let's hope it will be sooner rather than later. Now that Eva is free, she is bound to become a more physical threat for the Scarlet Speedster, but she may prove to be easier to defeat. Once she is taken care of, perhaps Bloodwork will finally make his escape, and return as the main antagonist once more.
Airing Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, The Flash stars Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Carlos Valdes, Danielle Panabaker, Tom Cavanagh, Jesse L. Martin, Danielle Nicolet and Hartley Sawyer.
