Flash Theory: Why Atlantis Is Important To Arrowverse’s Future - Screen Rant

Since it's been discovered that Atlantis may be the key to saving Iris (Candice Patton) on The Flash, the home of Aquaman could end up playing an important role in the Arrowverse's future. This is far from the first time that the underwater city from DC Comics has been referenced in the Arrowverse, but it would be the first time that it's factored into the main plot of an Arrowverse series.

The idea that Atlantis is part of the Arrowverse was first acknowledged in The Flash season 2 when it was revealed that it existed on Earth-2, but of course, it was never shown. Nor was it expected to be, given the inclusion of Aquaman in the DCEU. Though exceptions have been made, DC typically has rather strict rules when it comes to the Arrowverse using characters who are important to the movies. This was demonstrated by how Arrow has treated Deathstroke (Manu Bennett).

For a while, the references to Atlantis in The Flash were just fun Easter eggs, but that changed in "Crisis on Infinite Earths", which pulled the city deeper into Barry's world. It was revealed that when the multiverse was reborn, Atlantis was moved to Earth-Prime. It was even mentioned in two post-Crisis episodes of The Flash, prior to being turned into a plot point at the end of season 6's penultimate episode. Atlantis has been suggested as the answer to Team Flash's Mirror Master problem, but they could play an even greater role in the near future. Here's how The Flash may pay off its most recent Atlantis tease.

Atlantis Could Be The Key To Stopping The Mirror Master

The second half of The Flash season 6 has seen Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and his friends faced with a new threat in the form of Eva McCulloch (Efrat Dor), the Arrowverse's latest version of the classic Flash villain, Mirror Master. Eva has been trapped in a world called the Mirrorverse for several years. Seeking revenge on her husband, she replaced Iris, Kamilla (Victoria Park), and Singh (Patrick Sabongui) with mirror clones. Kamilla's clone sacrificed herself for their plan and Iris' clone has been defeated, but the threat Eva poses to Team Flash remains. Also, Barry and the others still haven't figured out how to save their friends from the Mirrorverse, since no one knows exactly how to access this mysterious dimension.

A way to save them from the Mirrorverse was proposed by Cisco (Carlos Valdez) in The Flash season 6, episode 18, titled "Pay the Piper". Their new plan is to build a "perpetual-motion machine" that runs on a "self-sustaining source of perpetual energy". The component they need to finish this machine can be found in Atlantis, which Cisco visited off-screen after "Crisis on Infinite Earths". Atlantis, which possesses advanced technology in the comics, could provide Cisco and Team Flash with the necessary tools to get into the Mirrorverse and rescue their friends. Once there, they may learn a clue that they can use to defeat Eva, who now has her own way to leave the Mirrorverse. In the final scene of the episode, Eva was seen emerging from a machine of some sort, but no explanation for this was given.

Atlantis Could Solve Barry's Speed Force Problem

Could Atlantis be the answer to not one, but two problems on The Flash? Since "Crisis on Infinite Earths" ended, The Flash has been focused on two major storylines: Eva McCulloch and the death of the Speed Force. Right now, Barry's primary goal is to beat Eva and save Iris, but what's getting in his way is that he's slowly losing his speed. Team Flash has looked for ways that would allow Barry to create an artificial Speed Force, but none of their ideas have panned out so far.

With both of these storylines unfolding at once, it could be that The Flash is planning on solving both of these issues with the same plot device. It could be that when Cisco goes to Atlantis, he'll find out that their technology can also be used to get Barry his speed back. It makes sense that despite Cisco's earlier visit, they could have their hands on something that no one on Team Flash knows about. Clearly, Team Flash currently doesn't have the resources to restore Barry's speed, so it may take an advanced civilization like Atlantis to give them the answer they've been looking for. Sometime after Cisco returns, they may have to go back to Atlantis for Barry's sake. If Atlantis is utilized to beat the Mirror Master, save Iris, and give Barry his speed back, it may be only a matter of time before Team Flash (or someone else in the Arrowverse) seeks their help again.

Will Atlantis Appear In The Arrowverse?

DC Comics Atlantis from Aquaman

Does Atlantis being part of how Team Flash will deal with Eva mean that it will actually be shown on-screen? In the Arrowverse, showing Atlantis and talking about Atlantis are two very different things, so while one may be allowed, the other may not be feasible. However, it could be that parts of Atlantis will be incorporated in some way, as long as Aquaman is ignored and not too much is revealed. The cost of bringing it to life could also be a factor, given The CW's more limited production budgets.

Either way, it's hard to imagine Atlantis appearing in The Flash season 6 finale. Even though this particular trip to Atlantis is more important than the last, the finale is unlikely to show Cisco in Aquaman's home. Atlantis would be a massive addition to the show, regardless of how little of it is actually seen. And as previously mentioned, there are obstacles that would stand in the way of it being represented on-screen. That being said, if Atlantis is essential to the story, it should be shown. Anything that's being used as a major plot point should have a visible presence on the show. Since Cisco's journey to Atlantis may take a while - and the fact that season 6 was cut short by the coronavirus delays - the finale may not be the conclusion to the Speed Force or the Mirror Master plotlines. This means that Atlantis could be something that The Flash can build to in season 7.
