Flash Theory: Godspeed Is Working With Season 7's Villains - Screen Rant

Warning: SPOILERS for The Flash season 6, episode 18, "Pay The Piper".

Godspeed could be part of a cult out to steal Barry Allen's powers in The Flash - and that group could be season 7's main villains. Several lines of dialogue in the penultimate episode of The Flash season 6, "Pay The Piper", suggest that this is the case and set the stage for the upcoming season 7.

Godspeed is a recent introduction into The Flash's mythology in the comics,  first appearing in The Flash Rebirth #1 in 2016. The current The Flash series' opening arc established Godspeed as Barry Allen's best friend, police detective August Heart, who also gained a connection to the Speed Force but became corrupted by its power and began killing other speedsters to increase his own abilities. Godspeed was introduced into the Arrowverse with The Flash season 5 episode "Godspeed," where August Heart was a Mercury Labs intern in the year 2049 and the first supervillain fought by Nora West-Allen as XS. Heart replicated the Velocity-9 drug that gave ordinary people superspeed without a Speed Force connection and began committing robberies to gather the materials to make his powers permanent.

Barry Allen fought Godspeed in the opening of The Flash's season 6 premiere, "Into The Void". However, this Godspeed was revealed to be an impostor; the fourth one that Team Flash had encountered over the summer of 2019. While capable of great speed, the copycats seemed to be mentally challenged and incapable of human speech, though they made the same disturbing electronic noises, like an old-fashioned modem. Apart from the Godspeed costume, there was no connection to August Heart and no explanation for where (or when) they were coming from. But it's possible that the explanation behind all this is that Godspeed is working with a cult of villains, which could extend beyond season 6 and into season 7.

The Flash Godspeed Pins Barry With Vibrations

Another Godspeed appeared in The Flash season 6, episode 18, "Pay The Piper", and this one seemed capable of independent action, unlike the first four Godspeeds Team Flash encountered earlier in the season. He also possessed a new power no speedster had ever shown before, reversing the vibrational energy generated by his breaking the sound barrier into a telekinetic force capable of pinning Flash in place and draining his Speed Force energy. This Godspeed was ultimately revealed as another fake, but he did establish several interesting facts before he, too, was left as a mindless drone who spoke in electronic beeps.

When the fifth Godspeed first faced Flash, he identified Barry Allen as "the one who stopped the others," before attempting to drain his power, only to be driven off by Nash Wells and a pulse cannon. After breaking into STAR Labs a second time, Godspeed demanded that Barry give up his speed to him within the hour or the people of Central City would suffer. During their third and final encounter on-camera, Godspeed told Barry, "You don't deserve the speed you were given. We do." Finally, in an interview that took place off-camera, the latest Godspeed told Barry that he was sent by "one who wants infinite velocity."

Curiously enough, this sounds precisely like the motivation and modus operandi of Savitar, a villain from The Flash comics who declared himself the God of Speed and built a cult of personality devoted to killing all speedsters but Savitar and claiming their powers for themselves. Savitar was adapted into a villain for The Flash season 3, but without the cult angle and a twist that revealed him to be a corrupted future version of Barry Allen. With the revelations revealed in "Pay The Piper," however, it seems that Godspeed is being set up in a similar role, either leading the cult himself or as an identity shared by this new cult leader's minions.
