Note: This article contains spoilers for Arrow's series finale.
In neither brightest day nor blackest night did we ever imagine Arrow would actually follow through with all those Green Lantern teases and turn Diggle into a bonafide superhero.
Although the series finale did stop short of dressing David Ramsey up in emerald spandex, his final moments on Arrow echoed Green Lantern's origin in every other aspect, including the meteor crash and a familiar green light contained inside that box.
Following years of teases and fan speculation, this came right after Crisis on Infinite Earths finally confirmed Green Lantern does exist in the Arrowverse after all (albeit Ryan Reynolds' version).
Both Ramsey and executive producer Marc Guggenheim have been understandably vague about what this means for Diggle's future, although the latter did hint they've "got some really good ideas" (via IGN) for his character still moving forward.
It's probably no coincidence that Diggle's moving to Metropolis so soon after Superman's new series was given the go-ahead, but before we start speculating about a possible Green Lantern team-up on that show, there's Ramsey's upcoming appearance on The Flash to consider as well.
Post-Crisis, Barry Allen will race back onto our screens in an episode titled 'Marathon' on February 4 – and he'll be joined by Oliver's best friend, Diggle.
CW's official synopsis hints that the repercussions of Arrow's finale will continue to be felt upon The Flash's return, specifically when "Barry must face the consequences of the Crisis and fulfill Oliver Queen's wish for him."
While that explains why Diggle has shown up in Central City, it doesn't address the giant green elephant in the room.
Unless 'Marathon' is set before Arrow's final episode, this means Diggle will have already found Green Lantern's ring by this point, and you can bet he'll have questions about it for the Star Labs team.
Unfortunately, we doubt that Diggle will embrace Green Lantern's power this quickly, and we're almost certain that he won't wear the Emerald Knight's signature costume this time round. However, it would also be strange for this crossover to ignore these new developments completely. Don't be surprised if Green Lantern's ring is involved somehow, even in some small capacity for now.
Green Arrow and Green Lantern have teamed up multiple times before as part of a long-standing comic book tradition. In Oliver's absence, it would make sense for this partnership to now continue with Green Lantern and The Flash instead.
After all, Grant Gustin's own show started out as a backdoor pilot in Arrow, and it would be fitting to see Green Lantern introduced on The Flash in this same manner.
The Flash producer Greg Berlanti is currently working on a new Green Lantern TV show for HBO Max, and while it seems unlikely that Diggle will be involved (or any other Arrowverse show for that matter either), the future's still looking bright for Arrow's bestie on the small screen.
Those who worship evil's might better beware. That's all we're saying.
Arrow aired on The CW in the US. In the UK, it airs on Sky One and NOW TV.
