Former The Flash director John Francis Daley took a jab at Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker after the movie landed eleven Oscar nominations.
Fans and critics were surprised to wake up to Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker getting eleven Oscar nominations earlier this week, as the film has faced an uphill battle since it was announced. Despite being a critical and commercial darling, many naysayers were adamant that Joaquin Phoenix’s outing as the Joker wouldn’t be the recipient of Oscar gold this coming February. That sentiment is no longer the case seeing as Joker is expected to win big after it swept up at the Golden Globes with a Best Actor win for Joaquin Phoenix.
On the other hand, a DC alumni isn’t a fan of Joker’s trajectory of success. One of the frequent criticisms that Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker has gotten is that it’s merely a lazy remake (or, rather, a reinterpretation) of films like Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy, both of which were directed by Martin Scorsese. A large criticism the Joaquin Phoenix film faced was how it didn’t add anything to the psychological thriller genre but is getting all the praise because of its attachment to the DC universe, therefore validating comic-book films.
Former The Flash director John Francis Daley took to Twitter to throw shade at Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker for getting numerous Oscar nominations when a film like Uncut Gems was snubbed entirely despite getting more acclaim and fanfare. In his tweet, the former The Flash director mentioned how Uncut Gems would have gotten nominated had Adam Sandler’s character in the film been called The Riddler. Uncut Gems would’ve gotten Oscar love if they had just called Sandler’s character The Riddler.

Without a doubt, Joker was a success because it was called just that… Joker. If it had been called Arthur Fleck, it wouldn’t have been such triumphant film that has the credit of reinventing a genre that many people believe to be stale. The former The Flash director’s shade at the film seems warranted considering a film like Uncut Gems seems to have added more weight to the thriller genre as opposed to Joker, which merely repackaged it for a new audience.
Regardless of what fans think of The Flash director’s response, it’s always a good idea to objectively take a look at some of our favorite films and always give credit where credits due. In this case, it’s certainly unfair to tout Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker as a film that has legitimized the comic-book genre when films like Black Panther and The Dark Knight won Oscars at the prestigious awards show. As for former The Flash director John Francis Daley, the industry seems to be wide open for him and his creative partner Jonathan Goldstein, who was also attached to the DC Comics movie.

Here is the official synopsis for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker:
Director Todd Phillips “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fracturedsociety. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.
Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.
