The CW's The Flash follows the Speed Force-powered Barry Allen and his allies as they defend Central City from supervillain attacks and other potentially catastrophic events. The series has consistently proven to be a huge hit for the network, and as such, Team Flash will be returning for another season in late 2021. The show's Season 7 finale wrapped up some lingering plot threads while also setting the stage for some very interesting new developments in Season 8. Here's what we know so far about The Flash Season 8's plot, release date and trailer.
What Is The Flash Season 8's Plot?
The Season 7 finale of The Flash featured Barry teaming up with his wife, Iris, their future children Bart and Nora, Jay Garrick and the physical embodiment of the Speed Force to take on Godspeed. After they defeated the villain and locked him up in Iron Heights, Nora and Bart chose to stay in the current time while Barry and Iris renewed their vows.
However, not everything is perfect following Godspeed's defeat. In order to help beat the evil speedster, Barry restored his archenemy, the Reverse-Flash, to life. The Reverse-Flash escaped after the final battle, and will presumably loom large over Season 8. In addition, reports have indicated that several new villains will appear, including a major new foe from the "world of horror and the supernatural."
Series executive producer Eric Wallace has stated that Season 8 of The Flash will show Barry's transformation into a "confident, incredibly powerful, secure team leader." Barry and Iris' marriage will be tested throughout the season, as will Joe and Cecile's relationship. Other confirmed plot points that Season 8 will address include Iris' time sickness, villains from the show's past, Kristen Kramer's newly-discovered superpowers and more.
The season will start with a five-episode event that will star characters from across the Arrowverse, in a manner similar to the previous crossovers between the CW's superhero shows. The Flash will be the only series to feature the physical crossovers, but the consequences of the event will ripple out to the other series.
Who Are The Cast and Characters in The Flash Season 8?
So far, the only main cast members confirmed to return for Season 8 are Grant Gustin (Barry), Candice Patton (Iris), Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin Snow) and Jesse L. Martin (Joe West). The status of the other members of the lead cast have not yet been announced.
Long-time cast members Carlos Valdes (Cisco Ramon) and Tom Cavanagh (Harrison Wells and Reverse-Flash) left the series during Season 7, and this will be the first season to not feature them as series leads. Despite this, series executive producer Eric Wallace has hinted that the Reverse-Flash will return in Season 8.
Jordan Fisher (Bart), Jessica Parker Kennedy (Nora) and Natalie Dreyfuss (Sue Dearbon) will also be appearing in guest starring roles throughout the season, while Eric Wallace has confirmed that Kristen Kramer (Carmen Moore) and Godspeed (Karan Oberoi) will return in Season 8.
