Cisco is is his name and rhyming is his game. Famous for naming villains on The Flash and being the resident funny guy, Cisco serves as the show's comic relief. As a veteran member of Team Flash, he's also amassed quite the fanbase from The Flash fandom.
Although fans mostly have good things to say about Cisco, there are a few controversial opinions about the character shared on platforms like Reddit. Even though he's a fan favorite, certain things about his character and his storylines are picked apart and dissected in discussions among fans on Reddit.
8 Has Nothing More To Add To The Show
Cisco has been an integral part of Team Flash since season 1. Throughout the show, his friendship with Barry, Caitlin, and the various Wells' evolved and he got powers too and became Vibe. After his relationship with Gypsy and then Kamilla, and then giving up his powers, it doesn't seem like there's anywhere else for the character to go.
One Reddit user commented that Cisco has run his course on the show and he and Caitlin "are only there to spout technobubble [sic] and medical jargon and flip-flop about their powers." To some extent that seems true, because apart from providing some technical insight during their battle of the week, there's nothing new for the character to do on the show.
7 His Character Development Was Weak
The characters on The Flash faced heartbreaking separations, loss, death, and a lot more throughout the show. As the series progressed, each character developed, both professionally and personally, like Caitlin’s evolution into Frost and Iris owning Central City Citizen.
However, some fans felt like certain characters didn’t have a satisfying arc on the show. For example, the Redditor riabe said, “Cisco is one of my favorite characters but if I'm being honest he has horrible development.” This is in reference to his lackluster storylines throughout the show. The only time he’s seen outside Team Flash is with his love interests and he has no other major storylines central to him.
6 Getting Rid Of His Vibe Powers Made No Sense
After Team Flash created the metahuman cure, Cisco decided to use it during the season 5 finale and gave up his powers to live a normal life with Kamilla. Fans had mixed feelings about his decision like Reddit user riabe commented that "Cisco getting rid of his Vibe powers makes absolutely no sense."
While his decision was understandable, especially because of the traumatic experience with Reverse-Flash that led to him becoming Vibe, it was difficult for fans to accept. Especially since, in spite of getting rid of his powers, he continued to be part of Team Flash fighting powerful villains, which meant constantly being in the line of danger and not being able to help as he used to since he no longer had powers.
5 He Should Have Passed Down Mecha-Vibe To Chester
Season 7 had Cisco leaving Team Flash and joining Argus, but he later came back as Mecha-Vibe to help with the war against Godspeed. A few fans on Reddit, such as Sure_Asparagus felt like his return wasn't necessary and he should've passed down the Mecha-Vibe role to Chester. The Redditor went on to explain that "having Cisco become Mecha-Vibe was pointless after giving up his powers."
Considering that Cisco had already left The Flash, this opinion seems like a reasonable suggestion. It gives Chester a bigger, important role on the show and eliminates the redundancy of having Cisco get rid of his powers and then bringing them back again artificially.
4 He & Gypsy Were A Terrible Match
When Cisco and Gypsy were dating, they rarely spent time together because they lived on different earths and had demanding jobs. In spite of that, they had a lot in common, like their breaching powers and good chemistry, but a few fans disagreed such as user davey_mann who said, “Cisco and Gypsy aren’t that great as a couple.”
Their relationship was a little rushed, mostly because of their living setups and limited time together. It also had some entertaining moments due to Breacher’s overprotectiveness and his relationship with Cisco.
3 He Has No Presence On The Show Outside Team Flash
Apart from his contributions to Team Flash and the brief focus on his love life, there isn't much attention paid to Cisco's life. As Reddit user Ad_Total said, he and Caitlin "don't have any presence on the show outside the team."
While The Flash has shown the lab, CCPD, Barry and Iris's apartment, and Joe and Cecile's home numerous times, the same cannot be said for Cisco's. It's not clear if he even has friends or a life outside of Team Flash except for his girlfriend. This was actually a contributing factor to his decision to leave the team in season 7 after Psych showed him his greatest fear was to be stuck at STAR labs after everyone else had moved on.
2 His Relationship With Breacher Was Great To Watch
During his previous relationship with Gypsy (Cynthia), Cisco met her father, Breacher, who had the same powers as he did. Cisco was initially terrified of him as their first encounter was Breacher hunting him. Some fans didn’t like Breacher or his relationship with Cisco but a few, like the user o_kai thought he was funny and their relationship was great to watch.
They were certainly entertaining and offered comic relief with their contrasting characters. Even after Cisco and Gypsy’s breakup and her subsequent death, Cisco and Breacher’s relationship continued and they teamed up to find her killer.
1 His Flashpoint Storyline Killed His Character
The Flashpoint storyline is one of the most polarizing in The Flash fandom. Apart from the confusing time travel aspects, flashpoint had a negative impact on the characters, especially Cisco. In one of the timelines, his brother died and he asked Barry to go back in time and save him. When Barry refused to make more changes to the timeline, it destroyed their friendship.
Cisco became miserable, which fans like the user jdessy found annoying when the show “got rid of most of his humor and made him whiny for half the season.” As much as this change to his character was justified based on what he had gone through, it didn’t go down well with most fans who were used to and preferred the fun, always making jokes and pop culture references Cisco.
